Dak Prescott already being compared to Tony Romo at the Cowboys: “The years are melting away, he's going to wind up not doing anything”

Dallas quarterback faces renewed criticism over playoff record

Another disappointing start to the NFL season has revived a familiar debate in Dallas and how much longer can Dak Prescott remain the face of the Dallas Cowboys without delivering a meaningful postseason breakthrough?

The veteran quarterback has spent more than a decade leading one of the league's most recognizable franchises, accumulating individual accolades while repeatedly falling short when the stakes are highest.

That contrast has prompted Fox Sports Radio personality Rob Parker to draw an unfavorable comparison between Prescott and former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, whose own career ended without a Super Bowl appearance.

Speaking on Friday's edition of The Odd Couple, Parker argued that Prescott's impressive regular-season achievements would count for little if Dallas continued to struggle in the playoffs.

Damning Dak Prescott and Tony Romo comparison

Prescott has made five playoff appearances during his Cowboys career, compiling a 2-5 postseason record without progressing beyond the NFC divisional round.

Three of those defeats have come at that stage, matching a particularly frustrating statistic associated with Romo, who also failed to advance to the conference championship.

Parker believes the similarities are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore as Prescott moves further into his NFL career.

"Everybody doesn't have everything. And even the people that have everything, doesn't mean you automatically win," Parker said.

"I think it's a big copout, because you're looking at Dak, the years are melting away, and you realize he's going to wind up not doing anything. He's Tony Romo with chocolate milk."

The criticism reflects the expectations surrounding a franchise that hasn't reached the NFC Championship Game since its last Super Bowl-winning season in 1995.

Prescott refuses to panic

While Parker questions Prescott's long-term legacy, the quarterback remains focused on improving Dallas' current position in the NFC East.

The Cowboys entered their upcoming meeting with the Green Bay Packers at 2-3, having suffered a disappointing 24-16 home defeat against the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Prescott acknowledged that the competitive nature of the division provides encouragement but warned his teammates against treating other teams' struggles as an excuse.

"Hope's always gonna be there. That's encouraging, obviously, but you don't want to lose any games," Prescott said during Friday's media availability.

"And so, to me, the more you get caught up on that, the more you're giving yourself leeway, 'We can lose a game because nobody's taking off with it.'"

Prescott believes Dallas still has an opportunity to establish itself as a leading contender within the division.

"It's wide open for us to take off with it," he added.

Cowboys quarterback faces mounting pressure

The Buccaneers defeat also placed Prescott under scrutiny following an exchange with a contracted driver who reportedly criticized Dallas' performance as embarrassing.

Prescott subsequently explained that he accepted criticism but expected people to stand behind their comments rather than avoid confronting those they criticized.

Stephen A. Smith later addressed an unverified allegation that the driver had lost his job, saying any involvement from Prescott would be disappointing.

"If Dak Prescott got the dude fired, yeah, that's kind of weak," Smith said, emphasizing that his assessment was conditional.

Nevertheless, the larger question surrounding Prescott remains his ability to translate regular-season success into a sustained playoff run.

With Dallas attempting to recover from another inconsistent start, the quarterback has an opportunity to change the narrative that has followed both him and Romo.

Until the Cowboys make a significant postseason breakthrough, however, comparisons between their two longtime quarterbacks are unlikely to disappear.
