Rams star appears to question Sean McVay after biggest upset of NFL season
Sean McVay is facing rising pressure to deliver as the Rams have faltered through six games

Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams appeared to question head coach Sean McVay’s decision to take him out at times in the stunning loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Despite entering Week 6 as 12.5-point favorites, the Rams fell 18-16 to the Cardinals, who leaned on six field goals to snatch a stunning road victory. The Cardinals’ win via special teams was the perfect method to get the win, given the Rams’ own struggles with the unit after their kicker was released and his replacement suffered a torn ACL.

Arizona took advantage of some fortuitous late officiating to get the win, leaving Los Angeles players furious. After the loss, Rams running back Williams did not hold back.

When asked why the energy had changed drive-to-drive, Williams said: “I couldn't tell you bro, probably because I'm not out there.”

Williams’ comments appeared to be a shot at McVay, whose Rams entered the season as overwhelming Super Bowl favorites. However, the running back played 42 offensive snaps compared to backup Blake Corum's 16 against Arizona.

On Monday, McVay was asked whether he has spoken to Williams about his remarks. He assured reporters that there are no issues between the pair, saying: “I have. He brought it up to me. I wasn’t aware of it.

“He’s such an energy for us. He was emotional after the game. I know this guy’s heart. He wants to make sure that he’s influencing and effecting positive change. I think what he said it was more of, ‘I just always want to try to be that spark.’

“He was frustrated after the game, but his teammates know what he’s about. When he explained it to me, I totally understood where he was coming from. He’s a great leader for us. I think the way that it was interpreted was not what his intentions were. I know his teammates and I felt that way. He actually brought that up to me on his own. I was not aware of it until he brought it up to me.”

Williams finished up against Arizona with 10 carries for 50 yards, while Corum had nine for 42. Through the air, Williams had three catches for 17 yards, and Corum had two for 18 and a touchdown.

Through six games, Williams’s usage rate is at 71 percent, with 110 touches for 610 yards. Corum stands at 27 percent, with 56 touches for 314 yards.

Ultimately, McVay and the Rams are looking to view Williams’ comments in a more positive light as the NFC West franchise seeks to turn their season around. The Rams have lost three of their last four games in tightly contested finishes, compounded by major injuries to key players like Davante Adams, Poona Ford, and Kobie Turner.

The 2-4 Rams are next in action against the 3-3 Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 25.
