Wellington AFC lose narrowly to Shepton Mallet in league cup

The home side scored after a deflected low shot fell to Conrad Peck, who drove the ball home 15 minutes from time.

The Tangerines had lost their previous two matches 6-0, but showed a clear improvement.

They defended throughout against fellow Premier Division opponents and reached half-time without conceding.

Shepton Mallet created the first chance after 11 minutes when a pass sent an attacker through, but Charlie Hawkings made a block.

Four minutes later, another Shepton Mallet shot went over the bar.

Playing up the slope in the first half, Wellington defended resolutely and frustrated the hosts.

Hawkings saved again after 33 minutes and kept out another effort in stoppage time.

Shepton Mallet continued pressing after the restart and headed a free-kick wide within two minutes.

In the 59th minute, Hawkings dived at full stretch to keep out another free-kick.

Wellington held on until the 75th minute when their resistance ended.

A low shot took a deflection into Peck’s path, and he drove it home.

The hosts sought a second goal, and Hawkings made another save in the 81st minute.

The Tangerines continued battling, and Luke Perry blocked a shot on the goal-line three minutes into stoppage time.

The result sends Wellington out of the league cup after a second meeting with Shepton Mallet this season, which they lost 4-0.

The performance followed two 6-0 defeats, although the team could hold their heads high at the final whistle.

The Tangerines have no match this Saturday.

They return on Wednesday, October 28, when they host Wells City at the Carly Press Ground.
