‘Never Had a Sophisticated Offense’ — Cris Carter Calls Out Jim Harbaugh Over Lack of NFL Success Amid Chargers’ 2026 Struggles

The Los Angeles Chargers have endured a nightmare start to the 2026 NFL season, raising serious questions about Jim Harbaugh’s approach. Their 23-17 loss to the Denver Broncos, after surrendering a 17-10 lead late in the game, dropped them to 0-5, their worst start since 2003.

The Chargers’ offense has been one of their biggest problems, averaging just 17 points per game while struggling to find consistency amid a growing list of injuries. Quarterback Justin Herbert has also endured a difficult stretch, recording 937 passing yards, five total touchdowns, seven interceptions, and six fumbles through five games.

With the team struggling to find answers, Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter has questioned whether Harbaugh’s offensive approach is the right fit for Herbert.

Cris Carter Questions Harbaugh’s Offensive System

Speaking on the “Inside Football” podcast, Carter raised concerns about Harbaugh’s history of developing quarterbacks and building an effective passing offense in the NFL.

“When has Jim Harbaugh had a very effective passing game in the National Football League?” Carter asked.

The former wide receiver acknowledged Harbaugh’s success with creative running schemes and dual-threat quarterbacks, particularly during his time with the San Francisco 49ers. However, he believes Harbaugh has yet to build an offense that fully takes advantage of a quarterback with Herbert’s arm talent.

“He’s never had someone who had the talent of Justin Herbert, arm talent in the pocket, and he has never had a sophisticated offense to go with any of the teams,” Carter said.

Carter also questioned whether the system Harbaugh used successfully at the college level can produce the same results in the NFL.

“My concern is not only for Justin Herbert, his growth, but this is not a great marriage,” he said. “Even though Harbaugh has proven himself as being a very good coach, he has not taken quarterbacks to the next level.”

Injuries Have Made Justin Herbert’s Job Even Harder

Harbaugh’s offensive struggles cannot be separated from the Chargers’ injury problems. More than half of the team’s original 53-man roster has either landed on Injured Reserve or appeared on weekly injury reports, leaving the coaching staff with limited options at several positions.

The offensive line has been hit particularly hard. Los Angeles started four rookies up front in Week 5, with Travis Burke at left tackle, Logan Taylor at left guard, Jake Slaughter at center, and Alex Harkey at right tackle. Veteran Cole Strange filled the right guard position.

Such an inexperienced unit has made it difficult to provide Herbert with consistent protection. The constant pressure and changes along the line have also limited the offense’s ability to establish a rhythm.

Herbert’s struggles are reflected in his PFN NFL QB Impact Grade of 60.6, which ranks last among 34 eligible quarterbacks, highlighting just how difficult his start to the season has been.

The Chargers face the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 6, with little time to turn things around.
