Player grades: Sixers come up short in NBA Cup matchup with Cavaliers

CLEVELAND -- The Philadelphia 76ers paid a visit to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday to continue their 3-game road trip and their NBA Cup schedule. The contest marked the second game between these two teams after the Sixers defeated the Cavs in the home opener back on Oct. 22 as they rallied from 29 down to finish the job.

The Sixers got off to another slow start in this one with the Cavs building an early double-digit lead with the Rocket Arena crowd behind them. The Sixers dug deep again to work their way back into the game, but Cleveland did just enough to eventually walk away with a 119-95 win and hand the Sixers a tough NBA Cup loss. Donovan Mitchell had 23 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds and Evan Mobley had 22 points, six rebounds, and four assists for the Cavs on the night.

Jaylen Brown had 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists for Philadelphia, VJ Edgecombe had 19 points and four steals, and Tyrese Maxey added 17 points and four assists. LeBron James had eight points, three assists, and seven rebounds.

Here are the player grades following the loss:

Tyrese Maxey: B-plus

The 2-time All-Star did a good job of muscling up against Cavs star James Harden on the defensive end as he forced him into some tough looks. He then put his head down on the other end to bother the Cavaliers and keep the scoreboard moving for Philadelphia. The 3-point shot was a bit of an issue for Maxey, but other than that, he was solid offensively. He got into the paint to create opportunities for himself and others and was tough on the defensive end. Maxey did what he was supposed to do in this one for Philadelphia to have a chance.

VJ Edgecombe: B-plus

When Maxey went to the bench, the Sixers needed somebody to provide some much-needed offense and Edgecombe provided it. He knocked down some tough shots in the second quarter and gave Philadelphia the support it needed on that end of the floor as the Cavs couldn’t slow down the second-year guard. He got hot in the second and carried the offensive load for the Sixers to keep them in the game. After the big second quarter, however, Edgecombe had a tough time getting going.

Jaylen Brown: B-plus

Brown gave a little bit of everything for Philadelphia. He took advantage of his opportunities to turn in an efficient night on the offensive end while also helping on the glass and make plays for others. He also was tough on the defensive end as the 5-time All-Star continues to impress on both ends for the Sixers. He probably could have been more aggressive and take more shots amid the struggles from James and Embiid, but overall, Brown played well in this one.

LeBron James: D-plus

After receiving a lot of love from the Cleveland faithful, James had a tough start as he committed a couple of turnovers and couldn’t convert on some open looks from beyond the arc. What he did do was be extremely active on the defensive end of the floor and help on the glass to be helpful in this one. The bigger issue was that he struggled to take care of the ball and he couldn’t quite find that rhythm on the offensive end as he missed some open looks he was able to create for himself. It was a rare tough night for one of the game’s greats. He shot 3-for-12 on the night with six turnovers.

Joel Embiid: D

It was a tough night for the big fella. The Cavaliers were able to swarm him whenever he had the ball and force him into some tough looks as he missed all nine of his field goal attempts. He has stated that he hasn’t been happy with his efficiency to begin the season, and this game won’t help in that regard. While he was able to get to the foul line to get on the board, and he was solid on the glass, he just seemed a bit off in this one. Embiid has had some off nights in his career, but this one, in particular, was a bad one for him. He just didn’t play with the force he usually has. One has to wonder if the plantar fascia bothered him in this one.

Dean Wade: C-minus

Again, nothing is going to stand out about Wade’s game on the stat sheet, but he stepped in and provided tough defense and was a presence for this group. The Sixers need a low-usage player to impact the game and Wade fills that role. He had a tough time converting on his open 3s, though, so that was tough for him.

Anfernee Simons: C

Simons gave the Sixers an offensive boost in the early going as he pumped in six quick points. The Cavs had to pay a lot of attention to him when he was on the floor and he responded by producing on the offensive end to start. After that, though, Simons had a tough night.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope: B

The 2-time champ hopped off the bench and was active on the defensive end while also knocking down a 3-pointer to contribute on both ends. Caldwell-Pope has done a terrific job of filling in the 3-and-D role for this group on a nightly basis.

Jabari Walker: B-minus

Receiving the backup 5 minutes with Adem Bona sidelined, Walker was terrific. He was active on the glass, he was helpful defensively, and he gave the Cavs fits on both ends of the floor. He is so rugged and tough in the paint and he gave Philadelphia a big boost in energy. A critique is that he isn't much of a rim protector and Cleveland had success in the paint against him in the game.
