Reports this week claimed that Leeds United are struggling to agree a new contract with striker Lukas Nmecha, with the player wanting a promise of more minutes before extending his deal.

The 26-year-old's current deal expires next year and there is a feeling that there could be change in the striking options at Elland Road. Dominic Calvert-Lewin remains first choice, but is injury-prone and 29 years old - there is an opening for a longer term option.

Ahead of the January window, Leeds United should certainly be looking at one in-form Championship striker in Blackburn Rovers star Andri Gudjohnsen.

Blackburn Rovers striker bags brace against West Brom

Gudjohnsen signed for Blackburn Rovers in August 2025. His first season in the Championship was understated, with seven goals in 25 outings. This term, he looks a new beast.

The 24-year-old has seven goals in 11 appearances across all competitions and bagged a brace in the 3-2 defeat to West Brom at the weekend.

That showing against the Baggies was thoroughly impressive - if Premier League clubs weren't tracking the player before, they certainly will be now. Both of Gudjohnsen's strikes were superb, the first from distance and the second a masterclass in poacher's instinct.

Speaking about the talisman earlier this season, Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray said: “He’s a pretty rounded centre forward. Decent with his body, he can hold the ball up, win flick-ons, knows where the back of the net is, he plays between the sticks, so he can link with the rest of the team that want to run forward and join with him.

“But he wants to score goals, he wants to play between the sticks. With total respect, the other two centre forwards who have got really good legs, athleticism, want to run down channels and stuff. I think Andri is more interested in scoring goals.

“Every team needs a centre forward who gets numbers, that make us win. He’s got to strive to get to 20 goals this season and hopefully beyond that."

It's hard to come by a natural goalscorer and Gudjohnsen certainly looks to have that quality. This is a player with real pedigree.

The striker came through both the Barcelona and Real Madrid youth academies, eventually tasting senior football for the first time with the Real Madrid B side. Spells in Sweden and Belgium followed and the player also has 12 senior goals for Iceland and is the son of ex Chelsea star Eidur Gudjohnsen.

All 10 found — excellent!

It's certainly an interesting prospect for Leeds United. The Whites may have an advantage over Premier League rivals in that, with Nmecha leaving, they could offer Gudjohnsen regular game time.

What's more, the striker's physicality certainly has hallmarks to that of Calvert-Lewin and Daniel Farke's system could be ready made for his integration. The Blackburn Rovers bagsman only signed a new contract at Ewood Park in May, but a serious bid from a top flight side could force the Championship outfit's hand.
