Bo Bichette will not be going anywhere for at least one more season, as the New York Mets infielder has reportedly chosen to take up his $42 million player option for 2027, putting any speculations about his future with the team to rest. The move follows a difficult first year with the Mets, in which the two-time All-Star failed to live up to expectations and deliver the same great stats that earned him fame in Toronto. Despite being a disappointment in what was an expensive offseason acquisition for the team, Bichette now has another chance to make his case. Bichette could have returned to free agency by declining his player option, but doing so would have meant settling for a $5 million buyout instead of his guaranteed $42 million salary.
Bo Bichette is a 28-year-old American professional baseball player who earned a reputation as being one of MLB’s most gifted batters within the span of seven seasons as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays franchise.
As a multiple-time All-Star, Bichette boasts an impressive career batting average of .294 along with 20.8 Baseball-Reference Wins Above Replacement (bWAR).
According to MLB.com, Bichette was also instrumental in the 2025 World Series run by the Blue Jays. Even with his recovery from a knee ligament injury, Bichette managed to post a .923 OPS in seven games, including a game-winning three-run home run in Game 7.
Financial security seems to be the determining factor as far as Bichette’s choice of staying with the Mets is concerned. The New York Post reports that Bichette took advantage of the $42 million player option on Thursday, October 29, securing another season with the Mets.
His disappointing overall numbers meant testing free agency could have been a significant financial gamble. MLB.com reported that Bichette would have struggled to secure another contract matching his existing $42 million annual salary.
However, there were some positive developments towards the end of the season. Having endured a rough beginning to the year, Bichette went on to put up a line of .285/.337/.442 after June 10.
The deal provides much-needed stability for the Mets, with Bichette set to join up with Francisco Lindor on the left side of the infield.
Importantly, Bichette still holds another $42 million player option for 2028, which means that he will be able to enter free agency again next year.
