Michael Carrick could be sacked within hours if Man Utd board follow regular blueprint

Michael Carrick could soon be put out of his misery as Manchester United's woes continue

Michael Carrick is on the brink

If recent history is any guide, Manchester United don't mess about when it comes to ending a struggling manager's reign. Michael Carrick has almost certainly taken charge of the club for the last time after Sunday's dismal 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth.

Carrick was granted a reprieve following the Champions League hammering away to Como, where divisions within the squad were further exposed by Bruno Fernandes' public criticism of his manager's tactics. Carrick responded by taking the brave decision to drop his captain, but it proved futile as United were overrun by the Cherries.

While the club's issues run far deeper than the manager, it appears certain that Carrick will lose his job, with Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte the frontrunners to succeed him.

United's hierarchy typically move swiftly after the decisive defeat. Here's a summary of how long the club's last six permanent managers had to wait...

Ruben Amorim

Amorim's fate was probably sealed before his final fixture against Leeds in January. A fiery clash between him and Jason Wilcox on the Friday sparked alarm.

When Amorim publicly criticised the director of football in his post-match press conference, he learned of his fate on Monday morning, roughly 18 hours afterwards.

Erik ten Hag

The Dutchman, whose recent remarks about a "toxic culture" within the dressing room now seem particularly intriguing, was likewise dismissed on a Monday after a Sunday loss.

With United languishing in 14th spot following a 2-1 defeat to West Ham, Ten Hag received news of his sacking from chief executive Omar Berrada and then-sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

The last pre-INEOS dismissal. Following a dismal start to the 2021/22 campaign, Solskjaer recognised his time was up at half-time during United's 4-1 thrashing at Watford.

He revealed to The Athletic: "Nobody told me, but I knew at half-time against Watford. We didn't look like a Man United team." The official decision came the following day when Ed Woodward summoned him to a meeting.

Jose Mourinho

Perhaps owing to his reputation in football - or the expense of terminating his contract - Mourinho was let go almost two days after his final game, a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool, which left the side 19 points adrift of their bitter rivals.

Louis van Gaal

One of the more ruthless sackings, considering the Dutchman had just lifted the FA Cup. Within 24 hours, he was informed his position was being terminated. The formal statement came on Monday, with Mourinho appointed the next day.

David Moyes

After suffering a 2-0 loss at former club Everton, Sir Alex Ferguson's replacement was formally dismissed less than 48 hours later following talks with Woodward. Moyes had already braced himself for the inevitable, having seen reports of his impending sacking in the media the previous day.
