Joe Lawler urges Tadley Calleva to embrace historic date with Aldershot

Joe Lawler’s Tadley Calleva side look on to this Saturday as they travel to face National League side Aldershot Town in the FA Cup.

Never in the club’s history had a Tadley side reached even the Third Qualifying Round – making their sensational 2–1 comeback victory over Step 3 heavyweights Dartford at Barlows Park all the more extraordinary.

Now, the Combined Counties Premier Division South outfit find themselves just 90 minutes away from the First Round Proper and a potential dream tie against Football League opposition.

The five-tier gap between the two sides makes the task at the EBB Stadium a monumental one, but manager Joe Lawler is taking the occasion in his stride as the excitement builds.

Despite the massive interest surrounding the tie, the Tadley management team are keen to ensure that preparation remains as structured and disciplined as any standard fixture.

When asked how he plans to approach the tie compared to standard league encounters, Tadley manager Joe Lawler said: “I’ll try not to treat it any differently, really.

“Bit tricky, bit annoying having two league games in the week, but it is what it is.

“We’ll look to make sure that our full focus is on that before we turn our head to Saturday.

“Then on Saturday, it is a massive game, massive game for the club and the boys, so we’ll try to do what we normally do really – we’ll go into it, we’ll prepare right, we’ll make sure we’re ready, and then we’ll try and give as good account of ourselves as we can.”

Selection headaches are a welcomed problem for Lawler, with every member of the squad desperate to seal a starting XI selection for what is arguably the biggest fixture in the club's history.

With fixtures piling up as the Romans catch up on missed league matches, Lawler believes squad harmony will be the deciding factor at Aldershot.

Outlining his approach to team selection and praising the impact of his bench, the Tadley boss said: “To be completely honest, it’s a squad game.

“I think all the boys have shown that this year – they’ve been really good at that, they’ve focussed on it.

“They understand the position we are in, they understand that we’re already 4 or 5 games behind teams in the league.

“We’re going to be Saturday, Tuesday [league matches], so there’s going to be lots of games coming this season.

“I’ve got to say, the boys that have come off the bench, whoever it is, have been top-class when they’ve come on – attitudes have been really good.

“They’ve all looked to impact, whether that was in the FA Cup against Dartford, on Saturday, the boys had come off the bench and won us the game at Abbey – another great impact from all of them.

“So going into Saturday, all they can do is do their best in all the games up to it and then me and the coaching team will get together and we’ll try to pick what we think will be the best XI for the game.

“But whether they’re starting, whether they’re on the bench or even a couple that have been missing, they’ll all impact on that game and they’re all have an impact on that day.

“Hopefully they just continue to give us the great character and great mentality they have all season and we’ll see what we can do.”

A travelling army of Tadley supporters is expected to make the journey to the EBB Stadium, eager to play their part in another potential cup upset.

Having drawn an outstanding crowd at Barlows Park in previous round, Lawler made sure to dedicate the milestone occasion to the fans, committee, and those who have helped propel the club to unprecedented heights.

Sending a direct message to the travelling contingent, he said: “This game is for you guys, this game is for the fans, it’s for the club.

“It’s the FA Cup, right.

“I think the boys have done so well to get where they have done, I think that’s been supported by the fans that come last week, been to the FA Cup game, the committee and the club as a whole have really supported us to get to this position.

“So enjoy it.

“Come, enjoy the day, enjoy the game – we will give our best, as we always do, and we will try our hardest to get a good positive result for Tadley.”
