Welsh Cup finals to return to Newport for fourth year

The decision means the FAW Welsh Cup and Bute Energy Welsh Cup finals will again be held at the home of Newport County, despite the Exiles competing in the English football pyramid rather than the Welsh league system.

The Bute Energy Welsh Cup Final will take place on Sunday, April 11, with a 5pm kick-off, followed by the FAW Welsh Cup Final on Sunday, April 18, at 2.35pm.

Both matches will be shown live on S4C, with ticket details to be announced at a later date.

Rodney Parade has become the regular destination for the finals, with 2027 marking the fourth successive year that the two competitions have culminated in Newport.

Last season’s FAW Welsh Cup Final saw Caernarfon Town lift the trophy for the first time in the club’s history after beating Flint Town United 3-0.

The following weekend produced a dramatic Bute Energy Welsh Cup Final between Cardiff City and Swansea City.

Cardiff found themselves 3-0 behind to their rivals before recovering to draw level at 3-3 and eventually winning on penalties to lift the trophy for a fifth consecutive season.

The road to the 2027 finals is already under way, with the FAW Welsh Cup having reached the third round and the Bute Energy Welsh Cup at the first-round stage.

Jack Sharp, FAW head of domestic leagues, said: “Rodney Parade has established itself as an excellent home for the Welsh Cup Finals in recent years, with each season building on the success of the last.

“It provides the ideal setting for competitions as prestigious as our Welsh Cups. We enjoyed two fantastic finals last season and look forward to returning in April for the conclusion of this year’s competitions.”

Newport County have played their home matches at Rodney Parade since 2012 and currently compete in the English football system.

Main change: I’ve put the Newport County point in the second paragraph rather than tacking it on at the end.

That makes the unusual context clear immediately without turning a straight venue announcement into an opinion piece.
