Against the odds after a disappointing summer of transfer business, David Moyes has enjoyed a successful start to the season against Everton.
The Toffees went into the international break unbeaten and, while defeats against Chelsea and Arsenal since then have been disappointing, those are some of the toughest games Everton will face this season.
Everton now have the chance to bounce back against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup in front of home support at the Hill Dickinson Stadium - and Moyes must deploy young Tyler Dibling, or risk a frosty supporter response.
Dibling turned in a sublime performance against Wolves in the previous round of the competition, setting up Charly Alcaraz's goal in the 1-0 victory. The 20-year-old was a constant threat on the right flank in that match, his dribbling and drive exactly what was needed for the cup tie.
Despite that performance, and praise from the manager, the winger has not started a game since. When looking to bounce back from back-to-back defeats, Dibling's young fearlessness and positivity is exactly what the team needs.
Moyes has stuck with former Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace man Brennan Johnson on the flank, but the forward has not scored since bagging his first Toffees goal against Preston North End in August. Johnson deserves patience to settle, but it cannot come at the cost of Dibling's development.
Moyes need not wring drastic changes against Newcastle United tonight, but slotting Dibling into the side is an obvious move to make. The Everton manager himself knows that the player can really impact games.
Last month, shortly after Dibling's impressive performance against Wolves, Moyes said: "I'm smiling when you mention his name now.
"Suddenly, we're beginning to see somebody who's got more development in him, beginning to look as if he's getting closer to it, so let's hope that can continue."
Those are promising words, but Dibling needs more than praise in order to fulfill his lofty potential. He needs minutes. Despite a threadbare squad, Moyes has been reluctant to rotate, and that approach risks leading to injuries that the Toffees cannot afford.
Did it happen before or after?
Round 1 of 9
Dibling is a player who can cause Newcastle United real problems. Matthias Jaissle's side picked up a much-needed three points at Crystal Palace last time out, but have been easily stunned this season – both Leeds United and Coventry City put four goals past the Magpies in recent weeks.
For Newcastle United, there is too regularly an uncertainty over Jaissle's new style, and Dibling's pace can help him pounce on any tactical errors. Gabriel Gudmundsson, Sidiki Cherif and Johan Manzambi all caused the Magpies problems in a similar manner.
The cup tie is there for the taking tonight, and Moyes leaving the dynamism of Dibling on the bench is not what Everton fans want to see.
