Could Commanders send a top defender back to Patriots?

Will the Washington Commanders make any moves ahead of next week’s NFL trade deadline? After defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10 on Sunday, Washington improved to 2-4-1. While that record sounds like a sell, the Commanders are only games back of first place in the NFC East with 10 games remaining.

Washington began the season with two new coordinators. While the season got off to a rough start for the offense and defense, both offensive coordinator David Blough and defensive coordinator Daronte Jones appear to be figuring things out as they go. Jones’ unit has especially impressed over the last couple of games. While the Commanders struggled in the second halves of games over the first several weeks, things have shifted in the last two games.

It helps that Washington’s secondary is healthier, with the returns of cornerback Trey Amos and safety Nick Cross, but other players are shining, too. One of those players is outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson. In seven games, Chaisson has 19 tackles, including four for loss, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and 10 quarterback hits. Chaisson was nearly unblockable in Sunday's win over the Eagles, finishing with seven quarterback pressures.

He's on a one-year deal, but general manager Adam Peters should certainly look to extend him. At only 27, Chaisson had his best NFL season last year with the Patriots. He's on pace for an even better year in 2026.

Speaking of the Patriots, could they be looking to the Commanders, hoping to bolster their pass rush by bringing Chaisson back?

NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated mentioned it as a possibility.

“I think they would like to go and get some edge help; maybe they could bring K’Lavon Chaisson back from Washington,” Breer told NBC Sports Boston recently.

Keep in mind, this isn’t a report from Breer. But the fact that he’s merely mentioning Chaisson as an option is interesting. Has he heard the Patriots are interested in engaging Washington for Chaisson? Or has he heard that Chaisson is available?

Yes, Chaisson is on an expiring contract, but he’s a good player. He’s the kind of player you look to extend. He’s in the prime of his career and is on pace for his best season, one year after his best season, which is the type of trajectory you look for when paying guys.

Do the Commanders agree? They should. What if New England gives you a fifth-round pick for Chaisson? Is that worth it for a quality edge defender? Don't expect Washington to trade Chaisson, but it's certainly worth watching.
