The San Francisco 49ers improved to a flawless 6-0 with a 23-17 win over the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing for one of the NFL’s three unbeaten teams on primetime.
There were a few moments throughout the night where it looked like things could go the other way, including when the Commanders were driving to try to narrow their 13-point deficit with just under 13 minutes remaining. That’s when Jayden Daniels connected with Dyami Brown across the middle for a six-yard reception, but Fred Warner lit him up.
In doing so, many felt like Warner’s hit included contact with Brown’s head, which would have led to a 15-yard penalty. However, after initially throwing the penalty flag, referees conferred and decided to rescind the penalty, a decision that did not go down well with fans.
Here’s the play in question, where the 49ers’ linebacker appeared to have struck Brown in the helmet, leading with his head in the process. Only the refs determined Warner didn’t commit any violation.
One commenter on X called out the NFL’s referees for not calling a consistent game league-wide.
Another poked fun at the situation, but was clearly still miffed at the perceived bad call. “Upon further review, they determined they were just gonna let the 9ers keep getting away with head shots.”
Meanwhile, the Sleeper Seahawks account merely called it a “superstar call” because of Warner’s status as a four-time First-Team All-Pro.
One fan was quick to point out the inconsistencies between the college and pro game, since Warner may have been booted out of the proceedings in the collegiate ranks.
“If this was college, Fred Warner would have been ejected twice on this possession lol #MNF”
Another onlooker suggested that by Warner lobbying for his case, it swayed the referee’s opinion. “Fred Warner really just got that flag picked up by putting his hands on his head. Crazy stuff. Illegal contact on the next 3rd down gives us a 1st down anyway.”
Heck, one onlooker even called for the referee who made the final call to be fired from the NFL.
“The ref who just came in and told them to pick up the flag against Fred Warner needs to be fired ASAP. If your colleague saw something and threw a flag, you have to be 100% (sure) that it was a legal play to interfere. What an insane decision by the officials.”
Should Warner have been flagged? Some felt like it was a “blatant penalty” that the refs simply missed.
Unfortunately, there’s nothing the NFL can do about it now.
Yet, the Commanders still marched down the field and scored a touchdown at the end of the drive to pull within six points, but they weren’t able to add anything more to the scoreboard later on, as they suffered a loss and slipped to 1-4-1 on the season.
