Manchester United’s next managerial appointment could be shaped as much by negotiations as by football.
Replacing a head coach involves more than agreeing on a salary and handing over the keys to Carrington.
Contracts, compensation packages and the futures of an incoming manager’s assistants can all influence how quickly a deal comes together.
Those details become especially important when a club is considering a change midway through a season.
At Old Trafford, the search for a long-term solution has already exposed differing opinions among the people responsible for United’s football decisions.
Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann have emerged as contrasting options, with Jason Wilcox and Christopher Vivell reportedly backing different candidates.
Manchester United are now expected to remove Michael Carrick only once a deal for his potential successor has been finalised, as the Guardian reports.
Howe is understood to be Wilcox’s leading choice, largely because of his extensive Premier League experience.
The former Newcastle manager stepped away from St James’ Park in July, but would seriously consider returning to management if United offered him the position.
However, his departure did not completely sever his contractual ties with Newcastle, meaning United would reportedly need to pay around £3 million in compensation to secure his services.
A further, smaller payment could also be required for his coaching staff, including assistant Jason Tindall.
The recruitment process is not necessarily straightforward, either.
Christopher Vivell, United’s director of recruitment, has reportedly been pushing for Julian Nagelsmann, the former Bayern Munich and Germany head coach.
That leaves the club weighing up different preferences within its football leadership while Carrick’s position hangs in the balance.
Unai Emery has also been linked with the vacancy, although Aston Villa would reportedly seek a much larger compensation package to release him.
United’s immediate test is Saturday’s trip to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
They then host Roma in the Champions League before welcoming Aston Villa in the Premier League on 8 November, ahead of the November international break.
