Bury Town pick up four points from Southern League Premier Central Division fixtures against Stourbridge and Real Bedford following 5-0 derby defeat to Needham Market

Bury Town have continued their pleasing trend of responding positively to setbacks.

Defeats have been few and far between for Cole Skuse’s men so far this season.

But on the odd occasion they have been on the wrong end of a scoreline, they have bounced back immediately.

And that has been the case again over recent days as the Blues collected four points from the six on offer following their surprise 5-0 home defeat at the hands of neighbouring Needham Market last week.

Goals from Jamie McGrath and Callum Page sealed a 2-0 home victory over Stourbridge, while on Tuesday evening, they battled out a 2-2 draw at Real Bedford in a meeting of the Southern League Premier Central Division’s top two teams.

Bury’s assistant manager Paul Musgrove said: “The response couldn’t really have been any better.

“If we’re being greedy, you’d have wanted six points, but to get four from two very tough games after the Needham defeat is a big positive.

“In a lot of ways, we, as a coaching team, expected it because we’ve got an incredible group.

“But at the same time, it’s one thing saying it and backing them to respond, it’s another thing them going out and doing it, so fair play to the lads.”

Musgrove was particularly pleased with the way that Bury dug out a point away at table-topping Real Bedford.

Charlie Beckwith saved a penalty during a first half that ended level at a goal apiece after Bury defender Tommy Smith had cancelled out Josh Setchell’s opener.

An own goal then put the visitors in front just before the hour mark, but Real’s pressure eventually told in the 72nd minute with Jordan Ponticelli’s equaliser.

And while Bury’s cause was not helped by the 82nd-minute dismissal of Ryan Jolland, they held on to remain a point adrift of their hosts.

“It’s one of those where we’d definitely have taken a point behind beforehand, especially with all of the elements and the quick turnaround that comes with a midweek game,” added Musgrove.

“When you’re 2-1 up with 20 minutes to go, your mind does start to wonder if you can shut up shop and hold on, but it wasn’t to be.

“What was most pleasing was seeing us be resolute and put bodies on the line, because we haven’t always done that this season.

“It’s a mindset thing, and at times you’re going to need to change your approach to get a decent result.”

Bury may need to produce more of that tomorrow when they travel to face Hitchin Town (3pm).

McGrath’s goal was enough for Bury to win September’s reverse fixture, and the hosting Canaries go into the game in the relegation zone.

However, Musgrove is anticipating a tough afternoon in Hertfordshire.

He said: “They played really well against us in the first game, so we know what to expect.

“There might be times where we have to be resolute again, so it’s good that we’ve just shown we can do it, and it’s fresh in the memory.”

After that encounter, Bury will return to the home comforts of the Getaway Cars Stadium on Tuesday night when they entertain lower-level Mildenhall Town in the Suffolk Premier Cup (7.45pm).

It is a competition that Bury have not won since 2014, and it is eight years since they last reached the final.

“I say it every year that, as a club, it’s a trophy we should be looking to win,” said Musgrove. “We obviously won the play-offs, but we need to be winning trophies regularly, and I think the Suffolk Premier Cup is one of the best we can win.

“The club has underachieved in the competition over recent years, and that’s something we want to change.

“When Cole and I came in, we had little targets to reach, and improving our record in the competition was one of them.”
