Lando Norris pipped Kimi Antonelli, who is set to depose the Briton as Formula One world champion this weekend, in final practice in Mexico.
All eyes are on Antonelli in Mexico City as the 20-year-old is all set to secure his place as F1’s youngest champion on Sunday.
The Mercedes star needs only a ninth-placed finish to seal the crown but has vowed to do it in style.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc led the way on Friday and he and team-mate Lewis Hamilton traded times early on Saturday morning, only to fall away on the soft tyres.
In the closing stages, Norris issued a reminder of his world champion status by edging out Antonelli by just 0.001 seconds.
Leclerc was over a tenth back in third ahead of Norris’ team-mate Oscar Piastri. Hamilton finished only sixth, a place behind Max Verstappen.
Verstappen will receive a one-place grid drop after being penalised for colliding with Liam Lawson during Friday’s second practice.
The Dutchman’s former Red Bull team-mate Lawson, who was given the same penalty, is not yet confirmed to be driving for Racing Bulls next season and Verstappen said the incident was “not smart” for someone in the New Zealander’s position.
Verstappen’s current team-mate Isack Hadjar also faced a trip to the stewards over a paddock infringement, with social media footage showing the Frenchman shoving a fan who was trying to take a selfie with him.
The FIA issued the 22-year-old with a formal warning, stating: “The driver initially resisted the move by placing his hand on the waist of the guest, holding him at bay, then the driver pushed him aside with his open right hand.”
Hadjar was deemed to have been reacting to “an uninvited and rather aggressive act” by a guest who was “invading his personal space without consent” as he was attempting to make his way to his garage for opening practice.
Haas made a surprise announcement that Esteban Ocon had been replaced for the rest of the weekend by Ryo Hirakawa, but offered no explanation as to why.
Ocon took part in second practice on Friday, after Japanese driver Hirakawa had been given an opportunity in the first, but cut a frustrated figure after rowing with his race engineer during the session.
The Frenchman will leave Haas at the end of the season and is without a seat for next year as things stand. Haas have given no indication over their driver line-up for Brazil next weekend.
