“That’s a tall order” – Liverpool and Manchester City transfer idea shot down, player not good enough

Feyenoord star Anis Hadj Moussa is likely a name that you’ve heard of at this point, particularly because he was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League this summer.

The 24-year-old is currently the rising star at Feyenoord. He joined them in 2025 from Patro Eisden in Belgium and has since managed 32 goals and 14 assists in 95 games for the Dutch club.

That, naturally, has put him firmly on the Premier League’s radar. Newcastle United were particularly keen on him as they rebuilt this summer.

Sport Witness reported on that multiple times, including this report at the beginning of August which insisted that talks were on. Sunderland were also in the mix for him as well.

Liverpool and Manchester City

They’re not the only Premier League sides to have been linked either. For instance, back in 2024 Sport Witness reported comments from Feyenoord technical director Dennis te Kloese. He jokingly claimed that he was selling Hadj Moussa to Manchester City.

Liverpool were also believed to be in the mix. Indeed, a report in December 2024 insisted that Arne Slot was leading their interest in the winger. He, of course, knew all about Hadj Moussa after his time in charge at Feyenoord.

Neither club have signed him in the years since, but the links are there. And the more that Hadj Moussa continues to impress, the more likely they are to resurface.

Those that watch him every week, though, aren’t convinced. They instead believe that the Algerian needs to do a lot more before he can hit that top level.

Not good enough

Kenneth Perez is one such doubter. He watches Hadj Moussa each week and isn’t convinced yet.

“On Sunday, we saw the kind of speed Eredivisie players possess—take Hadj Moussa, for example,” he said on Voetbalpraat.

“But I wonder if you saw Real Madrid’s second goal. That is the kind of speed you actually need to compete at the absolute highest level.

“Hadj Moussa does things that you also see at the elite level; it’s just the sheer speed at which it happens… I don’t want to suggest that ‘we’—the Eredivisie—are insignificant, but the top eight clubs in Europe are in a league of their own compared to almost everyone else.

“My point is that we often assume players are ready to make the jump to the very top, but when you see the speed at that elite level, it becomes clear just how difficult that transition is.”

According to Perez, that gap between the Eredivisie and the absolute top means Liverpool and Manchester City are unlikely to come calling.

“There are clubs he could certainly move to—Real Betis, for instance—but as for the very top…” he added.

“He possesses some extraordinary traits, but I don’t think he quite has that final piece required to play at that level. When people say, ‘He could go to City or Liverpool’—I think that’s a very tall order.”
