The former Hoops playmaker reckons the case for the £11m Dane to start ahead of his electric team-mate is flimsy after his latest misfiring display in the 4-1 defeat to Benfica.

The forward missed a gilt-edged chance at 2-0 and watched Celtic come alive in the second half without him with Duran leading the line and finding the back of the net.

Hogh is the club's record signing but has only scored in one game so far – a hat-trick in the 5-1 pasting of Kilmarnock in August.

And now Allan reckons there isn't a case to be made for Hogh to be the starter with Hearts heading to Celtic Park on Sunday.

Speaking on Sportsound, Allan said: "For me, if I'm a creative midfield player and I've got Camilo Duran and Kasper Hogh to pick from to play up front, I'm taking Duran every day of the week. He looks to get off the side of defenders, if you put a ball in the area, he's more likely to be alive to it.

"Hogh just isn't firing on all cylinders. I can take that if he's doing the other side of the game a lot better than he is. You can see why Martin O'Neill made the substitution at half-time and there's no doubt Celtic looked much better going forward."
