NFL issues strong response after fans call for 'dirty' 49ers star to be punished
The NFL fined Fred Warner for two hits that went unpunished in the win over the Commanders

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner has been slapped with two fines by the NFL for his hard hits against the Washington Commanders.

On Monday Night Football last week, the 49ers secured a 23-17 win over the Commanders. While much of the conversation following the game surrounded Joe Buck and Troy Aikman’s return to the booth amid their own drama, some fans fumed over Warner’s hard-hitting “dirty” play.

Warner twice hit the Commanders' tight end Chig Okonkwo and has now been punished by the NFL. Neither hit drew a flag, although the first hit was initially flagged during the game, only to be picked up by officials.

The flag was picked up after the officials consulted, and referee Adrian Hill eventually announced that there was no foul on the play. But the NFL reviews plays after the fact and can issue fines even when no flag was thrown.

On Saturday, the NFL decided to bring down the hammer on Warner. The 29-year-old was fined twice: $47,762 for a hit on a defenseless player and $17,911 for using his helmet to initiate contact.

The second hit was also on Okonkwo, delivering a tackle at the end of a 3-yard pass play that did not draw a penalty flag. The two separate fourth-quarter plays cost Warner a total of $65,673 in fines.

If the four-time All-Pro draws two more flags for hits on defenseless players, he will be handed a one-game suspension. In 2026, Warner was also fined for a hip-drop tackle, which carries the same suspension risk if he commits three such tackles.

Unlike Warner, 49ers safety Malik Mustapha avoided a fine for his hit that left the ESPN booth questioning the call. On a 3rd-and-5 in the second quarter, his hit on Stefon Diggs forced an incompletion and appeared to injure the Commanders receiver’s hand.

Washington settled for a field goal, and the 49ers scored on the next drive to make it 13-3. ESPN’s broadcast team questioned the non-call. “I think Mustapha got away with one right there,” Aikman said.

Given there was no flag, many expected a fine to come Mustapha's way, so the lack of discipline is a surprise. However, that means the 24-year-old remains at one foul toward his own possible suspension for multiple hits on defenseless players this season.

Meanwhile, Warner has now been fined for four hits this season. He was fined twice for hits the NFL deemed illegal in the 49ers’ Week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals, with the two fines from that game totaling $41,793.

Elsewhere, Washington offensive lineman Chris Paul was fined $11,941 for a facemask infraction against 49ers linebacker Jaden Dugger in the fourth quarter. The penalty nullified Jeremy McNichols’ 31-yard touchdown run in the 49ers’ victory.

Warner’s unbeaten 6-0 49ers are next in action on the road against the 2-4 Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Oct. 25.
