New Zealand produced a stunning batting performance against India in the fourth T20I at Eden Park in Auckland, putting the visitors under enormous pressure with a record-breaking total. With India having already secured the five-match series by winning the first three matches, the hosts were determined to make a statement in front of their home crowd.
Leading the charge was Glenn Phillips, who delivered a sensational display of power-hitting to register a magnificent century. The right-handed batter took the Indian bowling attack apart with an aggressive approach, sending the ball regularly over the boundary and leaving the spectators at Eden Park thoroughly entertained. His remarkable innings, combined with Michael Bracewell‘s explosive contribution, helped New Zealand finish with 259/7 in their allotted 20 overs.
Phillips continued his excellent form in the ongoing series by producing another memorable performance with the bat. Having already registered consecutive half-centuries in the previous matches, the New Zealand batter took his game to another level in Auckland.
He reached his third T20I century in just 46 deliveries, becoming one of the fastest New Zealand batters to achieve the milestone in the shortest international format. The moment he completed his century was particularly special. During the 19th over, Phillips got underneath a full delivery from Arshdeep Singh and launched it over the long-off boundary for a massive six. The shot brought up his hundred and sent the home supporters into celebrations.
Phillips eventually departed after scoring 107 runs from only 49 balls. His extraordinary knock featured 10 sixes and six boundaries, showcasing his ability to dominate both pace and spin. The innings also helped Phillips achieve a significant individual milestone. He broke the record for the most runs scored by a batter in a single T20I series against India, moving past West Indies batter Shai Hope.
Furthermore, Phillips became only the second New Zealand batter to score a T20I century against India, adding another achievement to his impressive international career.
While Phillips controlled the innings with his remarkable strokeplay, Michael Bracewell provided equally destructive support from the other end. The left-handed batter smashed 65 runs off just 25 deliveries, putting the Indian bowlers under tremendous pressure during the middle and death overs.
The pair stitched together a sensational 100-run partnership, completely changing the complexion of New Zealand’s innings. Their aggressive approach prevented India from building sustained pressure and allowed the hosts to accelerate towards an imposing total.
Indian bowlers struggled to contain the scoring rate as both batters found boundaries with remarkable consistency. Phillips was eventually dismissed in the final over when Nitish Kumar Reddy got rid of him. Abhishek Sharma completed the catch, bringing an end to a spectacular innings that had put New Zealand firmly in control.
New Zealand finished their innings at 259/7, registering their highest-ever T20I total. The score also became the highest T20 total recorded at Eden Park, making the occasion even more memorable for the home supporters. India now face a daunting target of 260 runs to secure another victory in the series. With Phillips and Bracewell having given New Zealand tremendous momentum, the visitors will need an extraordinary batting effort to pull off the chase.
