Everton have a long, rich tradition of giving first-team opportunities to academy talents, and now there is a breakthrough prospect who is becoming increasingly deserving of a chance under David Moyes.

Over the years, Everton have had some fantastic youth prospects to come through the ranks at Finch Farm and make themselves senior stars. Wayne Rooney is the biggest example, while more recently, Harrison Armstrong is flying the academy flag.

But with David Moyes’ first-team squad so thin right now, he should be looking to bring further youngsters through as we approach the busy winter period in the next month or two. In particular, one wonderkid is deserving of being fast-tracked immediately.

Jonathan Nsangou should be fast-tracked by David Moyes

In the academy right now, there are candidates for first-team opportunities. Among them is 16-year-old Jonathan Nsangou, who has shown himself this season as ready to be handed greater challenges and even the experience of senior football.

Nsangou was named Everton’s best talent by The Guardian in their next generation list, and the reasons for this are absolutely clear, as he is currently having a special season for the U18s, playing two years up.

Over last weekend, Nsangou scored his 10th goal of the season already, despite only being in mid-October, and it was a performance that should see the club wake up to the fact that he is a special talent and deserves recognition as such.

During the international break, Nsangou played for the first-team in a friendly, pictured alongside the likes of Jack Grealish as he bid to show Moyes exactly what he is capable of and earn a chance this season.

Nsangou has been training with the men’s first-team training and has been scoring goals in these sessions, all showing that he is ready to be given the chances by Moyes to play senior football.

The 16-year-old could play either behind the striker or on the right, two positions Everton actually have depth, but an injection of youth, desire, and clear quality to Moyes’ slim squad can never be seen as a bad thing.

Nsangou is the kind of talent Everton needs to keep hold of, and showing him the pathway is how to do this. Especially while things are going well for the first-team, it is the perfect time for him to get these chances, without much pressure and in a well-functioning side.

He turns 17 in January and a professional contract should be on the table, one which could be sweetened with senior minutes.
