Ben Arbuckle says Oklahoma Sooners need 'belief' in the red zone

The Oklahoma Sooners' offensive woes continued on Saturday against the No. 15 Kentucky Wildcats. The Sooners fell 21-13, marking five straight games in which the offense scored fewer than 15 points.

The Sooners had some offensive positives against the Wildcats. They totaled nearly 350 yards of total offense, which is above their season average. However, the team struggled to put drives away with touchdowns and settled for field goals instead. They also turned the ball over twice in Kentucky territory.

Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle said that he believes it's a confidence issue for the team. He believes they need to get back to the basics and look at each play on its own.

"I think there's got to be a certain level of belief, especially when we get down there, that, hey, we're going to punch this into the end zone," Arbuckle said. "Inevitably, something bad can happen, will happen. But it's how you respond to that... We have to play each play with a life of its own."

For Oklahoma, the challenge is turning those encouraging stretches into points when opportunities arise. The Sooners can move the ball, but red-zone execution and costly turnovers continue to undermine their efforts. Rebuilding confidence will take more than positive practice results; the offense must finish drives, respond to setbacks, and execute under pressure when the margin for error is smallest.

As Oklahoma prepares for its next matchup against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Arbuckle and his players can put that approach into action. The Bulldogs present another test for an offense searching for answers, and the Sooners cannot afford to let previous mistakes dictate their next performance. If they can focus on each possession, trust their preparation, and play with greater conviction near the end zone, Oklahoma may finally begin to turn its offensive progress into a more complete performance.
