Kai Andrews feeling 'maturity' after first Oxford United goal

The midfielder bagged the winner in Oxford's 2-1 win over Wigan Athletic in League One on Tuesday night with a cool finish into the bottom corner.

The strike took Aaron Ramsey's side to 18 points from nine games, sitting seventh ahead of Wednesday night's third tier fixtures.

Coventry City loanee Andrews was away with the Wales Under-21 setup during the international break, captaining the side during their UEFA Euro U-21 qualification matches.

After arguably his best performance in a yellow shirt to date, Andrews credited his international experience, saying: "That was massive.

"I think it gives, obviously, the responsibility that it puts on me.

"It gives you a level of maturity, so I can feel like I've brought that into the game since I came back.

"That's also another confidence boost.

"Obviously, the results that we got out on international break were not great, but still individually, getting the responsibility of the captain's armband gives me a lot of confidence coming back here."

The young Welsh side were unfortunately defeated in both of their games, losing 1-0 to Belgium and 7-1 to Austria.

Andrews does have senior international experience, playing for the Wales first team on three occasions after making his debut in September of last year.

Fellow Welsh international Mark Harris and the Welsh contingent of coaches in OX4 have been important in the Coventry man's experience in Oxford.

"I think that was one of the biggest things with me coming here, that kind of familiarity, that link to the Welsh link with players and also with staff.

"I know that obviously some of the staff have worked hard to come into the club, so that link there gave me that confidence to come into the club and help me gel and help me settle in quite nicely."

Andrews' first goal for the club adds to his two assists against Leicester City in September.

"I think I said it in an interview prior, that I just want to add that effectiveness in the final third to my game. And so, the assists and the goals are what I'm looking for, and so hopefully I can build on that.

"But it's definitely a big confidence booster for me going into the next few fixtures.

He added: "To get that goal right in front of the home fans as well was a great feeling.

"First goal at the club, so I was buzzing with it, as you would have seen with my reaction after.

"The winning goal was massive, and from then on, I think we controlled the game."
