Eagles Week 8 injury report: 6 players listed as DNP ahead of Commanders game

The Philadelphia Eagles opened their Week 8 preparations Wednesday with an extensive injury report, listing six players as nonparticipants and another six as limited participants ahead of Sunday's NFC East matchup against the Washington Commanders.

Philadelphia held a walkthrough rather than a traditional practice, so Wednesday's injury report estimated how players would have participated in a full session. The report included 19 players, with running back Saquon Barkley, wide receivers DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks, linebacker Jihaad Campbell, wide receiver Britain Covey, and cornerback Jonathan Jones all listed as nonparticipants.

Barkley's status remains one of the biggest concerns after the veteran suffered a back injury during Monday night's 38-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The Eagles listed him with hamstring and back injuries Wednesday, adding another concern for a player who recently returned from a hamstring issue that kept him out of consecutive games.

Barkley opened the Dallas matchup with a 29-yard run and scored a touchdown on Philadelphia's first possession, but his workload was limited after his back tightened. He eventually left the game, forcing the Eagles to rely on their remaining running backs.

The injury comes at a difficult time for Philadelphia, which has lost five straight games and struggled to produce consistently on offense. Barkley's availability will be particularly important against Washington as the Eagles attempt to establish a balanced offense with Tanner McKee under center.

Philadelphia's receiving corps also remains a concern. Smith was listed as a nonparticipant because of a hamstring injury, while Wicks continues to deal with an ankle injury. Both receivers missed Monday night's loss to Dallas, leaving rookie Makai Lemon and the team's remaining pass catchers to handle expanded responsibilities.

Lemon responded with his first career touchdown reception against the Cowboys, but the Eagles would benefit from having additional receiving options available against Washington. Campbell was listed as a nonparticipant with hamstring and quadriceps injuries, adding to concerns for a defense that struggled against Dallas. Jones was sidelined by a hamstring injury, while Covey was listed with a knee injury after leaving Monday night's game.

The defensive injury situation extends beyond those six players. Outside linebackers Jonathan Greenard, Jalyx Hunt and Nolan Smith were all listed as limited participants, along with defensive backs Michael Carter II, linebacker Smael Mondon Jr. and defensive tackle Moro Ojomo.

Greenard continues to deal with an ankle injury, while Hunt was listed with knee and ankle injuries. Nolan Smith remained on the report with a concussion after missing Monday night's game, making his progress through the league's concussion protocol an important storyline throughout the week.

Philadelphia's defensive front has struggled to generate consistent pressure during its five-game losing streak, and its edge rushers' potential availability will be critical against Washington. The Eagles also received encouraging news: seven players are listed as full participants. That group included Zack Baun, Jakorian Bennett, Landon Dickerson, Arnold Ebiketie, Dallas Goedert, Drew Kendall and Tyler Steen.

Dickerson's full-participation status was a positive development after the veteran guard returned from injured reserve, while Kendall and Steen were also listed as full participants despite knee and shoulder injuries, respectively.

Philadelphia will need better offensive line continuity after injuries and personnel changes contributed to an offense ranked near the bottom of the NFL in scoring and total yardage. The Eagles enter Sunday's matchup averaging just 18.1 points and 264.9 yards per game, placing additional emphasis on getting their established offensive contributors healthy.

With a 2-5 record and five consecutive losses, Philadelphia has little room for additional setbacks as it prepares for its second meeting with Washington. The Eagles defeated the Commanders 24-22 in the season opener but have struggled to maintain that early momentum.

The Eagles return to practice Thursday, and actual participation should better indicate which players are progressing toward Sunday's game.
