Barry Ferguson has sent an important message to Rangers winger Djeidi Gassama after his start to the 2026/27 season.
At one stage in the summer, it seemed that Gassama was all set to leave Rangers, but he has stayed at Ibrox and has become a regular part of Derek McInnes‘ plans.
The Mauritania international has made the left wing position his own at the Light Blues, so much so that he’s keeping Findlay Curtis out of the team.
Ferguson is a well-wisher of this Gers team, being a club legend and former manager, and knows exactly where certain players need to improve. The best time to offer constructive criticism is now, with the team on a seven-game winning run, and he has told Gassama where he needs to improve.
The former Rangers boss admits that the 23-year-old has been excellent, but after seeing his decision making in the final third, against Kilmarnock, as well as the previous matches, he wants him to show calmness in and around the penalty area. While his dribbling has been impeccable, Ferguson does not want Gassama to get stiff further up the pitch.
He told Five Stars VIP: “In terms of Gassama, I’ve been impressed by him. I think he’s been excellent, but just he needs to polish up and that he he looks if he gets stiff when he gets in that position. Just a wee bit of calmness, because outside the box and he’s dribbling and whatever’s been excellent over the last month or so.”
Gassama is still to find the back of the net in the league this season, but has provided three assists in eight matches for the Gers. His only goal this term has come in the Scottish League Cup, where he scored and assisted in the 5-1 win over St Mirren.
Apart from that, he has been very good with his discipline, not picking up a single yellow or red card in 13 appearances. As he’s already played 910 minutes in all competitions, it’s clear that McInnes is a big fan of his, and he will be hoping to see the winger get his name on the scoresheet sooner rather than later.
