Cam Skattebo set to return to Giants RB mix after being 'taught a lesson'

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Cam Skattebo had a "good week" of practice and should return to the running back mix for the New York Giants against the Houston Texans, coach John Harbaugh said Friday.

Skattebo didn't have a single carry in Sunday's 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints. He landed on the bench for most of last week's game after a crucial overtime fumble in a tie with the Washington Commanders. It was his fifth fumble in 13 career games.

"It's been good, you know. I think I got taught a lesson," Skattebo said. "I don't know if that's from them or from myself, but I kind of had to step back and look at it and figure out why I was doing the things I was doing, what was happening. Came to practice, corrected those things, worked on them. Ready to go back out there and play ball."

The Giants had Najee Harris, who was released Tuesday, Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary ahead of Skattebo in the rotation against the Saints. Skattebo played six snaps after averaging 42 over the first five games.

The Giants praised Skattebo this week for handling it like a "pro" and trying to correct the mistakes.

"He was always going to be a big part of our season," Harbaugh said. "And he had a heck of a week of practice; all the backs did."

The second-year running back knows he still has to prove it on the field.

"I didn't do anything yet," Skattebo said. "I took care of the ball during practice, and whatever my role is on Sunday is going to be my role and I'm going to give it everything I've got."

Harbaugh said Harris' release was about setting a clearer course at running back and seemed to indicate that a four-man rotation was too much. Skattebo and Tracy are expected to split the primary role this week against a Texans defense that ranks third in the NFL against the run.

Tracy worked his way back into the mix after being buried on the depth chart early this season. He had a missed block in the preseason that led to quarterback Jaxson Dart getting sent to the medical tent and fumbled in the opener. But Tracy had a receiving and a rushing touchdown in Sunday's loss to the Saints to help him earn more reps.

Harbaugh talked earlier in the week about how none of the running backs have taken the reins and run with them this season. He is waiting for someone to step up.

Skattebo is the team's leading rusher with 81 carries for 294 yards (3.6 YPC) with one touchdown. Giants running backs collectively have averaged 2.4 yards per carry this season.

They know the pressure is on. They took notice with Harris being released.

"Nobody's safe. It's as simple as that," Skattebo said. "I think when we go on the field and we perform, if we're not performing, we understand there's a possibility of not being here. If I don't perform, I know there's a possibility of me not being here. We came in this week. We continue to work. We know where we're at. We know what we have. If we put that to display, we're going to be just fine."
