The countdown to the Indian Premier League 2027 (IPL 2027) has begun, with all ten franchises now having very little time to make important decisions about their squads. The IPL mini-auction is set to be held on December 16, with the retention deadline already set for the team.
All 10 teams must decide which players they want to keep and which ones they are ready to release, as the IPL has already set November 15 as the deadline for franchises to submit their retention lists. WPL 2027 Auction: Live Streaming and TV Broadcast Details.
As reported by ESPNCricinfo, the IPL Governing Council and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have finalized the mini-auction date. The IPL 2027 mini-auction will be reportedly held in Goa on December 16, and teams will have just one day to compete for their preferred players.
Interestingly, the auction will clash with the second ODI between India and Sri Lanka, which is scheduled to take place in Bengaluru on the same day—December 16. The team will have to finalize their retentions before November 15.
Once that deadline passes, all the franchises will receive the names of players registered for the auction and will shortlist their targets. The final list, along with the order in which player groups will come up for bidding, is expected during the week before the auction.
There has been very little movement in the IPL trade window since the 2026 season ended, with only two deals reported so far. The first big move came in June, when Lucknow Super Giants sent their captain Rishabh Pant to Delhi Capitals and received wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav in return.
Delhi Capitals were involved in another deal recently, trading fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad for uncapped leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari. Apart from these trades, no deal happened yet. Amid this, Gareth Batty to join CSK? Kasi Viswanathan drops big hint ahead of IPL 2027.
According to IPL rules, the trade window opens one month after the season ends and stays active until one week before the auction. It then opens again and remains available until one month before the following season starts.
However, the official schedule for IPL 2027 has not yet been finalized. Back in 2024, the IPL had outlined a possible window of March 14 to May 30 for the 2027 tournament.
However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia recently suggested that the upcoming season could begin towards the end of March.
The upcoming auction will be the final mini-auction of the Indian Premier League’s current cycle. The IPL is expected to hold its next mega auction before the 2028 season, which would offer franchises a major opportunity to rebuild their squads.
The 2028 season will also begin a new media rights cycle, although the BCCI has not yet issued the tender for the next deal. The previous rights sale in 2022 brought in an enormous ₹48,390.5 crore, approximately US$6.2 billion at the time.
