Sheffield Wednesday held by Cambridge in first game since Henrik Pedersen sack

The Owls, who sacked manager Henrik Pedersen at the weekend, took the lead through Mason Burstow soon after the break.

But substitute Sullay Kaikai equalised midway through the second period to rescue a point for the visitors.

Cambridge threatened early on, with Ernie Weaver forced to clear off the line while Ben Knight also put an effort wide.

Wednesday’s best first-half chances fell to Reece James and Harry Gray but Burstow struck five minutes after the break with a thumping shot, the ball going in off a post, following Callum Slattery’s free-kick.

Goalkeeper Jake Eastwood produced a superb save to keep out Burstow’s close-range shot before Cambridge levelled after 67 minutes.

Shayne Lavery raced away from his marker before squaring to fellow substitute Kaikai, whose emphatic finish beat keeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer from 20 yards.

After Wednesday’s Barry Bannan struck a post from distance, Cambridge applied late pressure with Lavery denied by Maynard-Brewery and several efforts blocked in a goalmouth scramble.
