Chelsea's 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday came at a cost, with Emi Martinez suffering a serious injury that will leave Xabi Alonso without his first-choice goalkeeper for the coming weeks.
The Argentine was stretchered off after a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during the second half at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Martinez received lengthy treatment before being taken to hospital, with Alonso later confirming that he had suffered concussion.
Further reports, including one from BBC Sport, have confirmed that Martinez had also broken his jaw.
There is at least some encouraging news for Chelsea supporters. Martinez has undergone surgery following the collision and has provided an update suggesting he is hopeful of returning relatively soon.
The 34-year-old shared a message on social media confirming that the operation had gone well, while thanking fans for their messages of support.
He also made light of the situation by pointing out that Chelsea had won and kept a clean sheet against Everton, before adding that he would be back in a few weeks.
That is a positive sign, although it doesn't give Chelsea a specific date for his return. There has been no confirmed comeback date announced, but he isn't likely to be fit to play until at least the middle of November.
Chelsea will understandably be cautious about rushing Martinez back into action. Even if the goalkeeper is optimistic about his recovery, the club must make sure he is ready before returning to the pitch.
In the meantime, Mike Penders looks set to get an extended run in the first team after making his Premier League debut against Everton.
The 21-year-old replaced Martinez during the victory and helped the Blues secure their first league clean sheet since January. It was a difficult situation in which to make his debut, but he handled the occasion well, commanding the back line well.
Alonso was quick to praise the young Belgian after the game, highlighting his personality and bravery while making it clear that Chelsea have full trust in him.
That confidence will be important, with the Blues facing rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the league before travelling to Liverpool for a Carabao Cup tie. Michael Carrick's Manchester United will then visit Stamford Bridge, meaning Penders could start three of his team's biggest games while Martinez recovers.
