Why Manchester United have decided against sacking Michael Carrick

With just two wins from Manchester United’s opening 12 games this season, the writing appeared to be on the wall for Michael Carrick.

Why Manchester United have decided against sacking Michael Carrick

Michael Carrick has endured a disastrous start to his first full season as Manchester United manager, with the Red Devils winning just two of their opening 12 matches across all competitions.

It represents an extraordinary collapse after the former midfielder transformed United’s fortunes following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal in January.

Carrick collected 39 points from his final 17 Premier League matches last season, guiding United from seventh to third and securing Champions League qualification.

However, that remarkable turnaround now feels like a distant memory.

Sunday’s humiliating 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth extended United’s winless run to eight matches, leaving them 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone.

The defeat followed Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League thrashing against Como, with Carrick’s side conceding seven goals across two matches.

Tensions have also emerged within the dressing room. Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned United’s tactical approach following the Como defeat before being dropped entirely against Bournemouth.

Lisandro Martinez had previously criticised the club’s recruitment, directing frustration towards director of football Jason Wilcox.

With United recording their worst start to a league campaign in 40 years, Carrick was widely expected to lose his job immediately after Sunday’s embarrassment.

Gary Neville also suggested the supporters singing Carrick’s name at full-time recognised that his departure was approaching.

Meanwhile, disagreements over potential replacements had emerged, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann among the leading candidates.

However, a significant development has now emerged from Old Trafford.

Manchester United hierarchy make major managerial decision

According to Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic, Manchester United have decided to give Michael Carrick more time to reverse the club’s alarming decline.

The decision follows Monday’s high-level discussions involving Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.

Despite widespread expectations of an imminent dismissal, United’s hierarchy have opted to give Carrick and his players another opportunity to turn their fortunes around.

The decision provides immediate stability following weeks of uncertainty, although The Athletic makes clear that significant questions remain about Carrick’s ability to revive the squad.

United have spent more than £50 million dismissing managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, while repeated managerial changes have failed to produce sustained success.

Avoiding another immediate dismissal offers an opportunity to break that cycle, although this has not been explicitly identified as the board’s deciding factor.

Carrick attended Monday’s behind-closed-doors Under-21 friendly against Hull City before returning to oversee first-team training on Tuesday.

Crucially, he will now manage Saturday’s Premier League encounter against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

However, with United desperately needing results, the pressure remains enormous. Carrick has been handed more time, but there is no indication that his long-term future is secure.
