Stallone wrote, “A lot of people think that the inspiration for the character of Rocky came from the fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner. That’s really not true.”
“The real inspiration came from an authentic heavyweight champion named Rocky Marciano who fought in the late forties and early fifties, when I was a boy. Marciano was exactly my size.” He added
Stallone then introduces the boxer with a few words of praise, explaining that Marciano did not start boxing until his mid-20s. He also points out that Marciano remains the only boxer to end his career undefeated.
Later, he concluded, “He was the perfect prototype for the character I was creating. Plus, the name Rocky was right there in front of me. It was perfect.”
Talking about boxer Rocky Marciano, his career began on March 17, 1947, when he was 23 years old, and he retired on April 27, 1956, at the age of 32. During that time, Marciano fought 49 matches and won every single one of them. Even more remarkably, Rocky Marciano won 43 of those fights by knockout.
Talking about Sylvester Stallone’s original Rocky movie, it was released in the U.S. on December 3, 1976, after premiering in New York City on November 21, 1976. Stallone not only played the lead role of Rocky Balboa but also wrote the Academy Award-winning film.
