Huddersfield on top, but difficult days for Derby - Sam Parkin's EFL takeaways

Huddersfield on top

Martin Drury has taken Huddersfield to the top of League One despite a lack of managerial experience

The Terriers are on a roll in League One, having won four of their last five under head coach Martin Drury and going unbeaten since losing to Bromley on 19 September. They beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 with Derensili Sanches Fernandes scoring once again.

"It's been a terrific start and it's easy to look at some of the signings that have come in. It's more than just the two goal scorers today obviously, but Sanches Fernandes has been a revelation, he looks at the moment far too good for the level.

"You never know how it's going to go when a manager takes a team for the first time in the EFL, but I've heard a lot of good things about him as a coach and his his team look like they have all the credentials to get promoted this season."

"I think so, yeah - he looks a class above. There were a couple of passes in recent games which really showed his quality, his awareness in the way to pass. He looks like a terrific player so whoever has done that bit of recruitment deserves a pat on the back."

Cheltenham coming good under Cotterill

The Robins are up to third after defeating in-form Newport County 1-0 at the EV Charger Points Stadium with a goal from Charlie McCann. Boss Steve Cotterill appears to have turned the fortunes of club around after returning for his second spell.

"It's obviously difficult at times, going back to somewhere where you're so fondly thought of, but you know he's replicating what what he did during his first bow and they absolutely love him there.

[Charlie] McCann is one of the stories of the season if you just look at his is goal record. All credit to him scoring goals and he was the difference maker again today.

"He missed a game through suspension recently and it affected them so he's become talismanic this season.

"Steve Cotterill has shown through the years that his teams are very difficult to play against but I've been equally as impressed with their work they are doing in possession, so they seem to have a really good thing going out down there at Cheltenham at the moment."

Derby in the doldrums

Derby County are currently 23rd in the Championship after drawing 1-1 with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. John Eustace's men have not won a league match since 1 September.

"It was a really big game for both clubs today because they've had indifferent starts to the season.

"For Derby, they've had problems with injuries. Obviously there was there was hope of a takeover in the summer that hasn't materialised. They're working with a squad that maybe is not as strong in every department but hopefully the club can use that point as a positive in the in the next few weeks ahead.

"I've got confidence that John Eustace can turn it around."

Norwich on the up?

Norwich City ended their five-game losing run in the Championship by coming from behind to win at Charlton Athletic and ease the pressure on head coach Philippe Clement.

"Defensively there's been enormous issues throughout the season and given that the personnel is quite similar to last season it's taking everyone by surprise.

"Obviously Mohamed Toure is missing. He probably has to be eased into the season given his injury issues and it didn't help losing [Ali] Ahmed just prior to the season to a serious knee injury. Kenny McLean's been missing as well so I think there are mitigating factors.

"You'd have to say that the manager [Clement], although he's got a lot of goodwill towards him in terms of the people at the club given how they performed last season, to ride out after straight defeats had they had they lost at the Valley would've been difficult. (It was) A much needed win against a Charlton side who've got big problems themselves."

QPR a surprise package?

Richard Kone scored a 15 minute hat-trick as QPR overwhelmed high-flying Swansea City 5-0 at MATRADE Loftus Road - his first goals since April. The Hoops now sit in eighth having only lost one of their last six matches.

"For QPR those two looked like they had the makings of a really good partnership so yeah the loss of form has been a bit concerning from Kone because I thought that he had the potential to maybe become a Premier League player one day.

"It can still happen but he needs to find consistency in the Championship and yeah, this is an enormous confidence boost for him for the team.

"The manager [Julien Stephan} seemed a little bit downbeat this week but to recover from the Birmingham loss and win so emphatically against a side who've had such a terrific start of the season is a statement win for QPR.

"I've got no doubt that he is a really talented coach. I just wondered if this season was gonna be tail off now because of the injuries that he's had in his squad.

"But yeah, an incredible win for them and Kone could really could be a difference maker for QPR being in those play-offs at the end of season."
