Manager of month Powell targets Jersey Bulls title

Jersey Bulls boss Elliot Powell says he would swap his Manager of the Month award for October for a league title win.

Powell has earned the award by leading his unbeaten side to top of Isthmian League South Central after 15 games.

The islanders - who have not lost in 34 league and play-off matches stretching back to last season - are a point clear of Bognor Regis Town, with a game in hand.

"It's obviously a good testament to the work that we've done as a coaching team, and as a playing team as well," Powell told BBC Radio Jersey.

"But there's other awards I'd prefer, and if I could swap one out for May time, I would do that right now. I'd bite your hand off for it.

"It's nice to get recognised, but ultimately there's bigger prizes to be won and hopefully we'll be in the reckoning come May."

Powell's side have not lost a game outside of the FA Cup and FA Trophy since 30 December.

But they came very close to defeat last Saturday when they needed a late equaliser to draw 1-1 with Hayes and Yeading United.

Bulls travel to 16th-placed Hartley Wintney on Saturday in the first of three games against sides in the bottom seven before hosting title rivals Bognor Regis on 28 November.

"The run that we're on, it is impressive and that always gives us a little bit of notice, but we want to keep that going," he said.

"We want to take that to 35 games this weekend, and then we've got a couple of home games that are really important for us.

"We want to try and get as close to 40 games unbeaten as we can, and if we do that, we're going to be in a very good position come Christmas time."

Bulls have never won a league title but they were promoted from the Combined Counties League Division One South following a Covid-19 restructure, having been clear at the top of the table before the pandemic struck in their first season.

And they earned promotion to the eighth tier in 2025 after having been knocked out in the Combined Counties Premier Division semi-finals the year before.

Last season Bulls were beaten on penalties by AFC Whyteleafe in the play-off semi-finals after finishing third in Isthmian League South East.

It is a situation that Powell - who told the BBC in the summer that would consider stepping down if Jersey Bulls failed to win promotion this season - hopes his side can avoid this year.

"I said straight after the play-off defeat last year that we don't want to mess around with the play-offs this year," he added.

"It's a message that I've been very clear with the players, a message that we've reiterated this week and if we're going to be serious about that we need to up the performance levels from Saturday and get back to somewhere near where we have been for the other 14 games this season.

"We've been excellent in large periods, we look like a hard team to beat, a team that are going to cause problems going forward and we need to join that back up this Saturday and get ourselves back to the top of our performance levels that we know we can be."
