Last 23 Watford managers ranked by how long they've lasted – with one sacked after two games

A round-up of every Watford manager under the Pozzo family, who could be about to make another change in the dugout

Watford manager Alessio Dionisi

Another Watford manager is set to bite the dust. Tuesday's 5-1 thrashing at Cardiff, where the Hornets were 4-0 down at half-time, piled more pressure on current boss Alessio Dionisi.

The result looks like the final straw for the club's owners, the Pozzo family, who are set to sack their fellow Italian, reports talkSPORT. With Watford second-bottom of the Championship, it would be one of the more understandable sackings by the Pozzos, who have gone through 23 permanent managers since taking control of the club in 2012.

That includes some who have returned for second spells. Mirror Football ranks every permanent manager under the Pozzos by how long they've lasted in the job...

Billy McKinlay (2 games, September 2014-October 2014)

The Scot actually boasted a 50 per cent win ratio and an unbeaten record after stepping up from first-team coach. Sadly, it was from just two games, as he was bizarrely sacked after just eight days in charge, making it one of the shortest reigns in football history. Win ratio: 50%

Oscar Garcia (4 games, September 2014)

Just four games for the Spaniard but he wasn't sacked. Instead, Garcia stepped down due to health reasons. Win ratio: 25%

Paulo Pezzolano (10 games, May 2025-October 2025)

The Uruguayan coach just made it into double figures before being shown the door after picking up just three wins. Win ratio: 30%

Chris Wilder (11 games, March 2023-May 2023)

Yes, we'd forgotten Wilder had a stint at Vicarage Road too. Probably because he was only at the helm for 11 games. Win ratio: 27%

Rob Edwards (11 games, May 2022-September 2022)

The Hornets actually made a reasonable start under Edwards but it wasn't enough for the Pozzos, who pulled the trigger after 11 games. Win ratio: 27%

Alessio Dionisi (12 games, June 2026-present)

If axed as expected, the Italian will leave the Hornets with a record of three wins, two draws and seven defeats in his 12 games. He can have few complaints. Win ratio: 25%

Claudio Ranieri (14 games, October 2021-January 2022)

Another managerial merry-go-round regular, the lovable Italian was sacked after 14 games. Win ratio: 14%

Ed Still (15 games, February 2026-May 2026)

Despite high hopes, the promising young coach was let go at the end of last season after just three wins in 15 games. Win ratio: 20%

Roy Hodgson (18 games, January 2022-May 2022)

Given Watford have hired virtually every living manager, it was only natural that they appointed Hodgson - a man with more clubs than Tiger Woods - at some stage. 18 games, 13 defeats: it was short and not very sweet, as Watford were relegated to the Championship and Hodgson stood down at the age of 74. Win ratio: 11%

Nigel Pearson (22 games, December 2019-July 2020)

The combative Pearson and Watford seemed a bizarre fit. Was relieved of duties two games before the end of the pandemic-interrupted season, with the Hornets battling to stave off relegation, which they failed to do. Win ratio: 32%

Vladimir Ivic (22 games, August 2020-December 2020)

Fifth in the Championship table, the Hornets appeared to be progressing nicely under the Serbian, only for the axe to fall four months into his reign. Win ratio: 41%

Slaven Bilic (26 games, September 2022-March 2023)

Bilic got the boot after six months despite being within striking distance of the Championship play-offs. Win ratio: 38%

Marco Silva (26 games, May 2017-September 2018)

Watford were 10th in the Premier League, albeit on a run of one win in 11 games, when Silva was sacked. The Pozzos blamed Everton for daring to make an "unwarranted approach" for the Portuguese coach. Silva was subsequently hired by the Toffees. Win ratio: 31%

Xisco Munoz (36 games, December 2020-October 2021)

One of the harshest sackings, Munoz guided Watford to promotion and then to a respectable 14th in the Premier League table. Win ratio: 58%

Slavisa Jokanovic (36 games, October 2014-June 2015)

Orchestrated Watford's promotion back to the Premier League by finishing second in the Championship, only to leave after failing to agree a new contract. Win ratio: 58%

Giuseppe Sannino (36 games, December 2013-August 2014)

The Italian resigned with the Hornets second in the Championship, claiming he had "gone as far as I can" in the job. Win ratio: 42%

Walter Mazzarri (41 games, July 2016-May 2017)

The Italian kept the Hornets in the Premier League, albeit only just in his sole season in charge, before stepping down after talks with the board. Win ratio: 30%

Valerien Ismael (48 games, May 2023-March 2024)

Almost got the year-mark in charge before being axed with Watford 13th in the Championship. Win ratio: 27%

Sean Dyche

Sean Dyche (49 games, June 2011-July 2012)

Dyche got a full season in charge, finishing 11th in the Championship, before becoming the first manager to be sacked by the Pozzo regime shortly after the family took control. Win ratio: 35%

Tom Cleverley (59 games, March 2024-May 2025)

After impressing as a stint as interim boss, the former Hornets player was handed the reins on a permanent basis. Was given the boot after failing to reach the play-offs. Win ratio: 34%

Gianfranco Zola (75 games, July 2012-December 2013)

Italian ownership, an Italian legend - this looked like a match made in heaven. Aided by a string of loan signings from the Pozzos' Italian club, Udinese, Watford reached Wembley after 'that' play-off semi-final victory over Leicester.

But they lost under the arch to Crystal Palace after extra time. And after failing to go up, Zola resigned just before Christmas the following campaign following a run of five home defeats in a row. Win ratio: 44%

Quique Sanchez Flores (66 games, June 2015-May 2016 and September 2019-December 2019)

Remember when Leicester won the Premier League? In the same season, the Hornets finished a respectable 13th in the top flight and reached the FA Cup semi-finals. That spell ended mutually while his brief second stint was cut short by the Pozzo family. Win ratio: First spell: 36%; Second spell: 17%

Javi Gracia (86 games, January 2018-September 2019 and October 2025-February 2026)

The gold standard of Watford's modern era. Appointed in January 2018, Garcia guided the Hornets to an 11th-place Premier League finish and to the 2019 FA Cup final, where they were thrashed by Manchester City.

His first spell lasted 18 months, which, in Watford terms, is worthy of a testimonial and/or statue. His second spell was less successful, lasting just three months. Win ratio: First spell: 38%; Second spell: 40%
