Nets rookie Mikel Brown Jr. reacts to career-high game vs. Hornets

NEW YORK -- Brooklyn Nets rookie guard Mikel Brown Jr. has had a solid start to his first NBA season as he navigates the point guard position while under a minutes restriction. Despite the restriction, Brooklyn has been asking more of Brown and to this point, he has answered the call to the point that he can be counted on to perform in big spots.

"You could say [this was my most complete game this season]. This is just the expectation that I hold myself to. I should play like this. Obviously, down the stretch, I had a couple of turnovers that I clean up," Brown said to the media after Wednesday's 114-104 win over the Charlotte Hornets. Brown was one of the best players to take the floor for the Nets and it seems like he gains more confidence by the dribble.

"[There was a] miscommunication. Me and Ju [Julius Randle] talked about it, and then the team talked about it. But I mean, this is the expectation. This is my standard that I'm supposed to be playing at, and I can do better than this," Brown continued. Since Brown was taken with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, he has made it clear that he expects to be an impactful player at the NBA level.

Despite playing just 20 minutes, the former Louisville Cardinal finished the game with 18 points, two rebounds, and four assists while shooting 6-of-11 from the field and 3-of-5 from behind the three-point line. Brown's previous career-high in points prior to Wednesday was when he dropped 17 points in 28 minutes against the Boston Celtics in a Oct. 27 matchup that resulted in the Celtics winning the game in overtime, 125-124.

Brown made a crucial mistake in that game against the Celtics and he understandably beat himself up for it, but since then, he appears to be more focused on playing his role and having fun with it at the same time. While Brown's minutes will continue to be limited for the time being thanks to Brooklyn's injury management program for his back, the rookie will continue to affect the game however he can for however long he's out on the court.
