Spalding Rugby Club are victorious in the second team contest against Kesteven

Spalding's second team took centre stage at Centenary Park on Saturday as they recorded a 46-12 home victory over Kesteven in Counties Four Midlands East (North East).

It was their first home game of the season and ended with a good win after Spalding scored nine tries in an excellent contest which was played in good spirit.

The first team should have been in action on home soil but Syston 2nds conceded their scheduled clash to hand the Elephants a five-point win in Counties One Midlands East (North).

Kesteven dominated the opening 10 minutes through their forwards making forceful carries and stretching Spalding's defence in front of their try line to the limit.

As a result, a significant number of penalties were given away, and each time Kesteven opted for a tap penalty using the props to charge for the line, Finlay Roy, Jordan Templar, Ryan Medlock and Connor Broome all put in decisive try-saving tackles.

From nowhere in the 11th minute, Spalding launched a counter attack down the right wing, entering Kesteven's half for the first time and Tom Parker-McGee's pace stunned the visitors to open the try scoring under the posts.

With a conversion by Bailey Hudson, Spalding never looked back.

Five minutes later, a backs move released Ollie Sorrell to go over, and another five minutes later, Parker-McGee outgunned Kesteven's defence with his speed and side stepping for Spalding to go 17 points up after 21 minutes.

Coach Rob Lucas started to use his bench with Medlock, Broome and Parker-McGee being replaced by Charles Goodwin, Harry Cranke and Tom Moxon.

Having had a big input in the backs with his forceful runs and superb tackling, Dan Adams went down with a bad leg injury and captain Medlock came back on.

To their credit Kesteven kept causing Spalding problems, and after 35 minutes, they had their reward with a good score by their backs in the corner.

At half-time, the score was 17-5 to Spalding, who then made further changes from their bench.

Prop Thomas Stevenson with his carries and hooker Elliot Humphreys with his speed and handling ability in tight situations were having an impact.

A superb flowing movement of the ball along the backs saw right wing Adam Foster outpace the covering defence to open the second half scoring.

There was a good response from Kesteven as they forced Spalding into untidy defending near their try line and the visitors went over near the posts for their second try which was duly converted.

Spalding’s response was immediate as full back Sorrell counter-attacked from deep, sliced through several attempted tackles, and from out wide, cut back inside to outpace everybody and score under the posts.

The last 15 minutes saw Spalding taking full advantage of their two extra players against a 13-man visiting side.

Forceful carries exemplified by Miguel Da Silva charging through weakening Kesteven tackles saw him crossing the try line at pace.

This was followed by Sorrell finishing off a move to score his third try of the afternoon, under the posts, and to finish off, back row Roy burst through out wide for the final try.

This was a strong collective performance, with some excellent attacking rugby.

The 1923s now have one win and one defeat at the start of their league season.
