The Brooklyn Nets (2-7) had to be feeling about themselves after picking up their second win of the season on Wednesday against a Charlotte Hornets team that they lost to in the season-opener. Brooklyn managed to win in front of their home fans before beginning a four-game road trip with a game at the Atlanta Hawks (7-4) on Saturday that the Nets weren't able to close the way they needed to.
The Nets lost to the Hawks 124-121 in a game where Brooklyn once again did what it needed to do for the first three quarters, but lost their grip on the game in the fourth period. Forward Michael Porter Jr. led the way for the Nets with 25 points and nine rebounds while forward Julius Randle had a solid all-around game with 19 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists.
Atlanta managed to win a game where they led for just 3% of the time thanks for forward Jalen Johnson's 30 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. The Nets had plenty of chances to put this game away over the course of the four quarters, but they weren't able to close the game the way they needed to in order to begin their road trip in the right way with a win.
This was another solid game for both veterans as Porter put up 25 points (8-of-17 from the field, 3-of-11 from behind the three-point line) and nine rebounds while Randle dropped 19 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists (to six turnovers). Porter has seen better days shooting the ball from deep and Randle has a history of taking better care of the basketball, but the duo played well enough to keep the Nets in this contest.
Sharpe has always been liable to put up a double-double in any given game thanks to his ability to finish around the rim and to grab virtually every rebound that comes in his vicinity. However, Sharpe did more than just score and rebound against the Hawks as he also dished out 13 assists in what was the clearest display of his unique skillset as a big-bodied center.
This was an interesting game for both Traore and Brown as both played well at various points in the game, but it was surprising to not see Traore enter the game at all in the fourth quarter. Granted, Brown, who played all 12 minutes in the fourth period, was on fire (13 points, one assist) to the point that Fernandez chose to stay with him down the stretch, but it may also be an indication that Fernandez and the coaching staff doesn't prefer to have the two young guards playing together.
