Welsh youngster firmly on Wales radar just days after making senior debut

Wales U20s full-back Lewis Edwards is firmly on the radar of senior head coach Steve Tandy, despite only making his Ospreys debut days ago.

The 19-year-old started in the Ospreys' Challenge Cup win away to Black Lion last Saturday, looking assured in the 15 jersey, having previously impressed at age-grade level and for Swansea in Super Rygbi Cymru. His senior debut was cut short, forced off with a knock after the hour mark.

But, with Tandy on the lookout for options at full-back, Edwards - having been at two of Wales' alignment camps over the summer - is clearly in his thoughts.

"We've got to look at potential as well," said Tandy after naming his autumn squad on Tuesday, "and again, how we do that.

"I think he's an outstanding rugby player. We've watched his SRC stuff, watched him in the U20s, I think he's got huge potential.

"It's making sure that we manage that progress, but also how we accelerate him as well to get him the exposure that that's needed to to come onto the international stage."

Blair Murray started at full-back in the summer, having taken over from Louis Rees-Zammit after the Bristol Bears wing played 15 throughout the Six Nations.

Rees-Zammit is back on the wing, having outlined his desire to play there moving forward.

Murray is the only member of Wales' squad regularly playing in the position - although that could soon change with Tom Rogers having moved to the Ospreys this summer to get more minutes at full-back.

"Louis has been fantastic for Bristol," said Tandy. "It's great to see, he looks fit and energised.

"We probably underestimated him coming back into the fold last year, so it's great to see him there. Zam's on fire on the wing, but again, he's a team man as well.

"If we needed him to go to full-back, and I've had good conversations with Zammo, then he would he would comfortably slot in there for us if we needed him to."

He added: "I think he's an option. Look, at the end of the day, we want players to play where they actually feel fully confident in what it is.

"But also we've got Blair, and Tommy Rogers is playing for the Ospreys, so we feel we've got players in around our backfield that can fill up that spot and do it really well."

On whether Wales now see Rogers as a more of a full-back than a wing, given his desire to wear 15, Tandy said: "I think we've got to be open-minded, because in the squad, Blair's the only one who's playing there regularly.

"I think it's something that Tommy's looking into, and when he played against the Dragons, he was excellent. With Jacob Beetham being injured and Lewis Edwards having picked up a bump as well, it's something we want to develop and and grow in our game.

"Tommy seems really confident there."
