Emi Martinez has provided an update after undergoing surgery on his jaw following a brutal collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite in Chelsea's win over Everton on Saturday.

The former Aston Villa goalkeeper sustained the injury after a clash of heads with the England defender as a cross came into the box. Both players received treatment on the turf before Martinez was stretchered off.

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso confirmed post-match that Martinez was conscious when he left the pitch and rushed to a nearby hospital. Martinez has since taken to social media to provide an encouraging update.

"Thanks to everyone for the messages, the operation went well," he wrote on Instagram, accompanied with a selfie from his hospital bed.

"The most important thing is that we won and with a bow at 0. We'll be back in a few weeks."

In recent years, the Football Association (FA) has introduced rigorous head injury protocols. When a player is deemed concussed, they must be monitored for 24 hours before embarking on a six-stage 'return to play' programme.

This includes an initial 48-hour rest period with limited physical exertion and 'cognitive' activities, including screen time and work commitments.

The FA recommends "a staged and graduated return to full daily activities", noting that "football training is allowed, but at a rate that does not worsen existing symptoms more than mildly or produce new symptoms".
