NEW IBERIA – Westgate has had some impressive performances so far this season.

And outside of the plethora of penalties, the Tigers turned in another terrific performance against Lafayette Renaissance Friday.

Behind an offense that made big plays when they needed them most and a defense that stifled one of the more explosive offenses in the area, Westgate shutout Lafayette Renaissance 21-0 to remain unbeaten and improve to 8-0 on the season.

“Our kids played their butts off,” Westgate coach Ryan Antoine said. “That’s a really good win at home. I’m glad we were able to get that done.”

With the win, Westgate accomplishes a preseason goal as they clinch the District 4-4A championship.

“That was the thing we set out to do before the season started,” Antoine said. “We wanted to be the district champs. We wanted to make sure we locked in homefield advantage. This is something that we are definitely excited about, something that we had circled and now it is time to keep going and keep building.”

Receiver Cayden Lancelin, running back Caemon Crockem, and quarterback Noah Antoine spearheaded Westgate’s offensive attack that compiled 405 yards – 249 passing, 156 rushing – of total offense.

“Those guys are our guys. They get us going,” Ryan Antoine continued. “We tell Noah don’t turn the ball over, line us up, get us in the right play, in the right formation and clean it up for us. Caemon runs the football for us and Cayden has been our big play guy all year.”

Lancelin finished with a game-high 183 yards and a touchdown on six receptions, while Crockem rushed for a game-high 113 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. Antoine completed 13-of-25 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Westgate’s defense suffocated Lafayette Renaissance for the vast majority of the night. LRCA (6-3), who had 86 yards – 51 rushing, 35 passing – of total offense in the first down, finished with 163 yards total for the game.

“I feel like we played well in all facets,” Ryan Antoine said. “We definitely played well on defense. Hats off to coach Tyrunn Walker and his staff for a great job of going out there and playing defense the way we did. To be able to hold a strong LRCA team that was putting up a lot of points to zero points was very big and definitely a deciding factor.”

Westgate’s defense – led by Texas A&M commit Chance Archangel, Ahmad Walker and Jason Domingue – were relentless as they became the first team to keep LRCA from scoring offensively since the arrival of Tigers coach Hunter Landry three years. Westgate recorded five sacks, forced and recovered two fumbles.

“It was all about population to the ball,” Ryan Antoine said. “We knew they had a strong offense that could put up a lot of points, so everything we preached was about all 11 to the ball no matter what. We did a good job of that (Friday) and we did a good job of that in practice. I loved the way we ran to the football and that’s the type of defense we have to play going forward.”

Archangel had five tackles and two sacks, while Walker had four tackles and three sacks.

Only thing that kept Friday’s performance from being perfect for Westgate was the fact they were penalized 22 times for 183 yards that took three touchdowns off the scoreboard.

“I know we had a lot of yards offensively, but they took two or three touchdowns back from us because of penalties,” Ryan Antoine said. “In playoff situations, we got to make sure that we clean all of that stuff up because we can’t have touchdowns getting taken back.”
