Dan Burn's brutal honesty on Newcastle United slump as Toon skipper reveals selection chances

The England international is fit again but may have to wait for his chance despite calls for him to start from fans

Dan Burn has made it clear that he can't just expect to walk back into Matthias Jaissle's Newcastle United XI just because he is captain - even though there are fans who would have him back in against Aston Villa.

Jaissle has emphasised in recent weeks that he is picking his team based on data he is getting back from his medical team, and also suggested that Blyth battler Burn is not ready to go in from the start yet. The England international was only used in a cameo role against Coventry City and came on way too late to make any type of impact at 4-1 down.

Former Wigan and Brighton star Burn had missed the start of the season due to an ankle injury but he is back up and running again. But now he admits he is facing a battle for his place with Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw establishing themselves as Jaissle's centre-back pairing.

When asked on the prospect of starting his first competitive game since the Toon skipper told Chronicle Live: "Hopefully. I've been working hard to get fit so I'm looking to get an opportunity at some point. The lads who have been playing have been doing really well. So I will have to work hard to get back in."

Despite only coming on in injury time at Coventry, the experienced 34-year-old's presence at the CBS Arena was important for Jaissle on Monday night. Deemed as one of the key figures in the dressing room, Jaissle is leaning into the knowledge of his captain after making a clean sweep of coaching staff in the summer following Eddie Howe's exit.

Burn was on hand to add some context to the defeat at Coventry but could offered an honest verdict after a poor display and understood why some fans booed at the end of the night.

Burn said: "We don't have time to dwell on it. I know we will look through this game; there are a lot of things we should have done better.

"But we will be looking to bounce back against Villa. Everybody is very disappointed, which you expect, and I understand frustration from fans when they have travelled all that distance. As I say we are trying to put it right starting against Villa."

Jaissle had been asked when Burn would start again as he looks to make his first appearance since the pre-season defeat to Strasbourg at St James' Park. He said on Thursday: "We need to manage that really carefully. That is the tricky part because we have missed them so much.

"Joelinton has been longer in training than Dan and the next steps is to integrate them and give them more game time. For Dan it is most likely too short to get the starting position. For Joelinton it could be quicker."
