Serge Gnabry has plenty of reasons to look forward to Bayern Munich’s Champions League showdown against Arsenal. The German international came through the London club’s academy, and Wednesday’s meeting at the Allianz Arena offers another opportunity to face the team where his professional journey began.

Speaking ahead of the match, Gnabry reflected on the emotions of facing his former club and admitted that the occasion remains special.

“It’s always a special game against a former club. I grew up there and I’m really looking forward to it. We last played at the Emirates. It’s a bit strange to play against a coach you used to play with. We want to win, that’s what it’s all about. I’m looking forward to the game,” said Gnabry (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

Gnabry spent time in Arsenal’s youth setup before making his senior debut for the Gunners. Although his career eventually took himelsewhere, the club remains an important part of his footballing story. However, sentiment will only go so far when the whistle blows, with Bayern eager to secure a statement victory against one of their biggest European rivals.

The match also reunites Gnabry with Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager and his former teammate. The Bayern attacker had plenty of praise for the Spaniard, recalling how Arteta helped younger players during their time together in London.

“He was a leader in the team back then, also our captain. He talkeda lot with young players like me and Hector Bellerin and always had an open ear for us. That shows what kind of personality he has. He led the team to this great success last season. He’s doing a very good job,” Gnabry remarked.

Arteta’s leadership clearly left an impression on Gnabry, who has watched his former teammate develop into one of the leading managers in European football.

There will be mutual respect before kickoff, but Bayern’s objective is straightforward: win. For Gnabry, few victories would be sweeter than helping his current club overcome the team where it all began.
