Liverpool fans react to claims Victor Munoz could be transformed into a right-back by Andoni Iraola

Liverpool have not completely fixed their problems at right-back, despite Ronald Araujo providing a temporary fix during the early weeks of the season.

Araujo has nailed down his spot as a regular starter ahead of Jeremie Frimpong, but after the Dutchman came off injured against Brentford on Saturday, Andoni Iraola needs to delve deeper into the Liverpool squad for more options.

The Spanish coach moved Victor Munoz to right-back following Frimpong’s injury at the Gtech Community Stadium, with the 23-year-old delivering really well, scoring Liverpool’s equalising goal and linking up nicely with Rio Ngumoha, who came on for Frimpong. Rousing The Kop wrote on Sunday that Munoz could be a long-term right-back option for Liverpool, but after putting that very question to fans on Facebook, it is clear that supporters do not agree.

Liverpool fans do not want to see Munoz at right-back

Munoz certainly has some qualities that could see him moulded into a right-back, and having him play in defence would also allow Liverpool to get someone like Cody Gakpo or Ngumoha into the team as well. But, despite some potential benefits, fans on RTK’s Facebook page simply weren’t convinced.

“No. Wasted there. Slot was criticised for playing players out of position at right back,” one supporter argued. “Munoz is a forward, and a good one. He can play all across the front line and has proved he can score goals.”

“No we ain’t playing this game,” another added. “Reverting good wingers to RB works out a little bit short term but it’s not a long term solution. I’d be looking at Kayode from Brentford and sell Frimpong or keep him as back up right winger.”

“He can make tackles but he cant defend corners so stop it,” another chimed in, with someone else also suggesting that the Spain international is just not tall enough to play at the back.

“No no no no please, he really struggled that day there, just that we had no option, please never think of that,” was another response.

“Very foolish poster. Did you sign him as a right back? Was he playing right back when you signed him?” one more fan questioned.

“Pls dont try to make him a right back. He is so good going forward. It will be detrimental to a players natural ability,” someone else argued.

“What a silly comment, he is a winger not a RB, he did well when needed but we needed quality RB, not just playing players out of position!” yet another posted, summing up the mood.

Who do fans want instead?

If Munoz is not playing right-back, and with Frimpong injured, some Liverpool fans have urged Iraola to do the natural thing and stick Joe Gomez in as cover if Araujo is not playing.

“The coach should play Gomez first, when injury comes, we can now try other options,” one supporter posted. “But does that mean Liverpool doesn’t have any current good right-back from the academy?”

Picking up that theme, another suggested that the Liverpool head coach should: “promote youngsters to play there,” although specific candidates were not named.

Meanwhile, fans are also clearly desperate for Liverpool to go into the transfer market for a new right-back in 2027, with Brentford’s Michael Kayode mentioned by a number of supporters as a player who the Reds should be in for.

While that could well be on the agenda for next year, Liverpool have to find a more immediate solution, and though the majority of fans do not appear to be in agreement, we still believe that the Munoz experiment should be given another try.
