Five Springboks wonderkids who completely fell off the radar – where are they now?
1

Not every rugby wonderkid becomes a world-beater. Just ask these five former Springboks stars, who once had the rugby world at their feet.

South Africa has produced some outrageous talent over the years. But for every Bryan Habana, there's a youngster who never quite hits the heights.

Some were tipped for 100 caps, while others looked like they could walk into any team on the planet. Then rugby did what rugby does. Injuries struck, form dipped and careers took some very odd turns.

So, where did they all end up?

1. Curwin Bosch

Remember when Curwin Bosch was going to be the next great Springboks fly-half? The hype was massive, and it wasn't hard to see why.

He had pace, skill and a boot that could send the ball into the next postcode. Bosch made his Test debut in 2017, aged just 20, with plenty tipping him to own the number ten shirt for years.

It didn't quite work out. He struggled to nail down a Test place, while his form at the Sharks came under fire. A move to France followed, and the Springboks dream looked a long way off.

Where is he now?

Bosch is back in South Africa with the Bulls, having joined from Brive ahead of the 2026/27 season.

He now faces the small task of competing with Handré Pollard for the number ten shirt. Not exactly an easy route back into the side.

But at 29, Bosch still has time on his side. A return to the Springboks would be quite the redemption story.

2. Johan Goosen

Johan Goosen was ridiculous when he first burst onto the scene. The former Grey College star could kick goals from almost anywhere and tear through a defence when he fancied it.

He made his Springboks debut in 2012, aged just 20. A decade of Test rugby seemed inevitable, but his career soon turned into one of rugby's stranger stories.

In 2016, Goosen stunned everyone by stepping away from the game while contracted to Racing 92. He later returned, but injuries kept getting in the way.

Where is he now?

Goosen has called time on his playing career after another injury-hit spell at the Bulls.

He moved into coaching and worked with the club's Under-23 players in 2026. He has also spent time working in insurance and farming.

Not quite the path many expected when he was tearing teams apart as a teenager.

3. Jan Serfontein

Jan Serfontein wasn't just highly rated. He was officially one of the best young players on the planet, winning World Rugby Junior Player of the Year in 2012.

A year later, he was playing for South Africa. The powerful centre went on to win 35 caps and featured at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Then came his move to Montpellier in 2017. Serfontein enjoyed a fine career in France, but his days in the famous green jersey were over. He never played another Test.

Where is he now?

Serfontein retired in May 2026, aged 33, after injuries ruined his hopes of one final chapter back home.

He had returned to the Bulls after eight years in France, but a knee injury ended his comeback and forced him to hang up his boots.

He finished with 35 Springboks caps and a French league title. A career most players would happily take, although it still feels like we never saw the very best of him at Test level.

4. Jaco Taute

Jaco Taute looked like he had been built in a laboratory. Big, quick and capable of playing full-back or centre, he had all the tools.

He made his Springboks debut in 2012, aged just 21. Surely, this was the start of something special?

Not quite. A dreadful knee injury knocked his career off course, with more setbacks following over the years.

Taute later played for Munster and Leicester Tigers, but he never managed to force his way back into the Test picture. His Springboks career ended with just three caps.

Where is he now?

Taute retired from rugby in 2022, aged 31, and his next career couldn't be much further from the pitch.

The former Springbok moved into finance in Pretoria. By 2024, he was working as a financial manager and studying to become a chartered financial analyst.

He was still based in Pretoria when interviewed in late 2025. From trying to stop the All Blacks to working with balance sheets. Fair play to him.

5. Pat Lambie

This one still hurts. Pat Lambie had everything you wanted in a fly-half. He was calm, brave and could kick a rugby ball through the eye of a needle.

The Sharks star made his Springboks debut aged 20 and went on to win 56 caps. For a while, he looked set to become a South African great.

Then came the concussions. A nasty collision with Ireland's CJ Stander in 2016 was one of several serious blows.

Lambie tried to keep going and even moved to Racing 92 for a fresh start. But the head injuries kept coming, and in January 2019, he retired aged just 28.

A horrible way for such a gifted player to bow out.

Where is he now?

Lambie has swapped rugby for property development, working with Collins Residential in KwaZulu-Natal.

He helps develop homes and housing estates, with his work including sales, marketing and project management. He was still involved in property development on South Africa's north coast in 2026.

Lambie also keeps an eye on the Springboks and his old club, the Sharks.

It's good to see him doing well after such a cruel end to his playing days.
