It is starting to look more likely that the New York Giants will not make a major addition to their running back room before Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.
The Giants are a team to watch over the next few days. Heading into the Week 9 schedule, they sit atop the NFC East standings with a 4-2-1 record. A year ago, they were 2-5 and had reason to be sellers before the deadline. Now their fans are hoping they shop for upgrades to make a serious run at the division title in the second half.
Rumblings around the team have linked them to trades for backfield upgrades for the last couple of weeks. According to reports last weekend, the Giants may be competing with the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Denver Broncos in ongoing discussions with the Indianapolis Colts about a Jonathan Taylor trade.
In a Saturday report, The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones claimed that “It would be a surprise” if the Colts don’t move the three-time Pro Bowler and that the Giants are believed to be one of the favorites. However, fellow NFL insider Tom Pelissero offered up a grimmer outlook on the Giants’ chances of making a deal.
“After weeks of speculation, the most likely outcome for Taylor is staying in Indianapolis,” he wrote. “The Colts quickly rejected an offer of a 2027 second-round pick plus another for Taylor [recently]. And while there were more inquiries made to the Colts this week, no team has come close to offering the type of premium capital that would persuade Indianapolis to deal him.”
The price for Taylor was always expected to be high. That is why running back-needy teams like the Giants need to have alternative options lined up if a deal for the Colts star proves to be impossible to make. That is why Tennessee Titans RB Tony Pollard has been viewed as a potential target as well.
The one-time Pro Bowler is one of the most underrated players at his position in the NFL and would cost much less in a potential trade than Taylor. However, Pelissero also revealed on Saturday that wide receiver Calvin Ridley is the player the Titans are likely to move as they continue to reject “overtures for running back Tony Pollard and safety Amani Hooker.”
A recent report claimed Tennessee is hesitant to move the impending free agent because of his valuable role in the locker room.
One other potential target for the Giants heading into the weekend has been Baltimore Ravens star Derrick Henry. After another loss on Thursday Night Football, it makes sense for them to be sellers and get some draft capital for April’s event.
While Henry would not get a haul like Taylor can, he would still get Baltimore a good return because he does not have much money left on his contract. Unfortunately, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Saturday that Henry is not expected to be traded and added that “The Ravens even recently informed Henry that they have no intention of trading him.”
It is now looking like the three players the Giants would be glad to add by next week’s deadline — Taylor, Pollard, and Henry — are not likely to be moved at all.
