Rugby: Tribute to Tony Hills as Harlow make it three wins in a row
Screenshot

BEFORE I begin my usual match report I’d like to take a moment to just reflect on the sad loss of Harlow rugby club life member Tony Hills earlier this week. Tony was a beloved member of the club and for over 30 plus years had volunteered in practically every role available from youth and minis coach to 1st XV touch judge and video analyst. My heartfelt condolences go out to all who knew Tony and in particular his family at this sad time. Once a Redman, always a Redman. It was lovely to see a perfectly honoured period of silence prior to kick off against Chelmsford.

As for the match itself it was the visitors who took an early lead as they went in search of their first win this season. But the home side made a swift comeback when Casey Baldock scored to level things up before Liam Batty’s conversion put them in the lead.

Hooker Bailey Albert extended the lead for the Redmen before half time with Batty adding another conversion. It hadn’t necessarily been the best half of rugby but as the home side made their way back to the changing rooms at the break they held a deserved 14-5 lead.

After the break Harlow didn’t look like they could be stopped as they took advantage of Chelmsford’s poor form. Brad Etherington scored yet again before Albert added his second of the day to secure the try bonus point. Unfortunately Batty hadn’t been able to convert from either score however he was successful from the tee after Adam Nnochiri added to his tally for the year with Harlow’s fifth try of the afternoon.

Chelmsford did manage to get a second try but once again failed to convert it. There was very little chance of a successful comeback for the Blueboys and any hope was lost when Ben Cranwell scored a 6th for Harlow before Etherington got his second of the day to extend the lead even more. Liam Batty successfully adding the extra two from the tee for Etherington’s second try to give Harlow a 31 point advantage.

The last score of the game did belong to Chelmsford as they added a third try right at the death with a successful conversion being added to bring the final whistle at Latton Park.

Harlow have now won 3 in a row after their opening day defeat to Thurrock. Up next for the Redmen is a tough test away to Finchley, but for now Harlow can enjoy being second in the table, just 3 points behind early leaders Rochford.

Full time: Harlow 43-19 Chelmsford

Harlow tries: Baldock, Albert x2, Etherington x2, Nnochiri, B Cranwell

Harlow conversions: Batty x4
