Former Pittsburgh Steelers George Pickens and Joey Porter Jr. have been ruled out for the Dallas Cowboys in Sunday’s Week 9 game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Pickens, who is dealing with shoulder and hamstring injuries, and Porter, who has an ankle injury, were both listed as questionable, but ruled out 90 minutes before Sunday’s game.
Pickens has been dealing with the shoulder injury for a month, and the hamstring injury has limited him in practice the last two weeks. He was limited in all three practice sessions this week before being ruled questionable on Friday.
Pickens’ injury could prevent him from being traded at Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline, if that’s something the Cowboys would have interest in doing. He’s currently playing under the franchise tag, and is scheduled to become a free agent in March. There has been little talk of news on him signing a contract extension with the Cowboys recently.
With Pickens out, Ryan Flournoy will likely step into a larger role alongside fellow starter CeeDee Lamb. Kick returner and slot receiver KaVonte Turpin has also been ruled out.
Porter was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice, but was listed as limited on Thursday and Friday. It’s the second time that he’s missed a game with an ankle issue since being traded to the Cowboys on Sept. 30. Porter will once again likely be replaced by Shavon Revel Jr.
He missed almost all of the offseason with the Steelers while claiming a back injury, and also attempting to negotiate a contract extension. He is also in the final year of his contract — the rookie deal he signed in Pittsburgh — and also has not had any progress toward signing an extension in Dallas. With the Cowboys sitting at 3-5 and well outside the NFC playoff picture, he could also theoretically be traded again.
The Cowboys and Colts will kick off at 1 p.m. That game will be broadcast on FOX, but will not be made available in the Pittsburgh market.
