A 93-year-old woman living with dementia has received a heartwarming response from Coventry City fans after her daughter began sharing videos of her cheering for the club online.
Known to her followers as ‘Sky Blue Nana’, Doreen Howell has been a devoted Coventry City supporter for over 70 years and was there at Wembley to witness the team win the FA Cup in 1987.
Mrs Howell grew up in Coventry during the Second World War and experienced the bombing of the city by the German Luftwaffe throughout the 1940s.
Now in a nursing home, she still remembers the Sky Blue Song and loves watching old matches on television.
Mrs Howell is set to celebrate her 94th birthday next week.
Susan Brennan, Mrs Howell’s daughter, said: “Despite the challenges dementia brings, Mum still has a wonderful sense of humour, a beautiful smile, and a remarkable ability to make people laugh.
“One thing that has never changed is her love for Coventry City Football Club.”
Mrs Brennan visits her mother every day and, in May this year, started a YouTube channel, where she shares short videos of their time together.
More recently, she has set up a TikTok account and has been touched by all the messages of support, particularly from fellow fans of the club.
Comments from social media users include: “Keep on singing, girl!”, “Amazing! PUSB!”, and “I love her!”
With almost 400 YouTube subscribers and 3,600 views, Mrs Howell’s community is continuing to grow.
It was Mrs Brennan’s hope that, in sharing her mother’s journey with dementia, she could help raise awareness around this cruel illness and show that, amid the hardship, there can still be moments of happiness, laughter, and love.
“Recording these precious moments has become something very special to us both,” explained Mrs Brennan.
“I know there are many families experiencing the heartbreak of dementia, and I hope our videos bring them a little comfort and remind them that the person they love is still there.”
