It was a frustrating day in East Lansing for Michigan State football fans. The Spartans lost another close game against a Big Ten opponent, and this one stung a little more, as MSU was in clear control of this one for most of the game, only to fall to No. 25 Northwestern 24 to 21.
Part of the frustration for those in attendance and watching at home comes down to some conservative play-calling towards the end of the game. After stopping a fake punt attempt by Northwestern, Michigan State had the ball in Wildcats' territory, got a first down, and then proceeded to run the ball three times, which led to a blocked field goal. The Spartans never opted to take a single shot toward the end zone on a passing play. Even if the field goal was made, Northwestern was left with a minute left on the clock, which they used to march down the field and secure the win.
