Bayern Munich will have a slight departure from tradition in terms of their kit layout next season.

According to the good people at Footy Headlines, Bayern will receive a European-only kit next season. Now, technically speaking, the third kit is labeled as the European kit in official club releases and the club shop. However, in this particular case, the kit will be strictly used for European games, not domestic Bundesliga or DFB-Pokal games.

Footy Headlines have actually leaked a color scheme for next season’s third kit. It is unclear at the moment as to whether said third kit is actually the European kit in question, or if it is a domestic third kit and the European kit will be a “fourth” kit of sorts.

Although not even a hint of a design has been announced yet, one can make a few speculations. The biggest question is probably the color. If the third kit is the European kit, it will be a dark khaki base “combined with striking hi-vis yellow applications,” according to the description from Footy Headlines. the European kit is indeed a fourth kit, it can be reasonably assumed that it will be red, as an alternative version of the domestic home kit. Such was the case in 2000/01, when Bayern wore a different red kit that was made iconic as they won the Champions League in Milan.

If the third kit is indeed the European kit, however, it also would raise a few logistical issues. Bayern’s rumored home and away kits are red and white, respectively. But Bayern wear their darker kits quite often in domestic games when they play teams that play in red and/or white, namely Augsburg, Union Berlin, Mainz, etc. One could argue that the darker kits are more used than their lighter kits, as was the case last season. In fact, the men’s team has never suited up in the white away kit this season in a competitive game at the time of writing. So restricting the use of a dark kit in domestic games could lead to potential color clashes.

It therefore remains to be seen exactly how the kit layout will look like next season. This writer personally believes that there will be a fourth kit because of the aforementioned domestic color issues, but he also thinks it is a tad unnecessary. This is coming from a man who owns 158 football shirts, and counting.
